Any other tips on not sounding like him?
So, you don't like the sound of Dark Side of the Moon or Abbey Road?
No.
too bad for you! :P
Indeed. I always feel bad about not being stuck in the 1970's.
Surely You aren't implying that only those who are "Stuck in the 1970's" so to speak could possibly like these recordings?

If I like Bach does that mean I am "Stuck in the Baroque period"?

:?:

I agree that the art of production and engineering has been lost to a large degree. now you just need an MPC-2000 and baggy britches to be a "producer"

Over compressing a song is a bad idea, it is just unnatural sounding. it has its uses, but should not be the way that an album is mastered.

I think Nuffink thinks a compressor is not only a musical instrument but the most important one in the song.

Dude, a few things here.

#1: Alan Parsons Project has 2 good albums (not great) and 2 soso. But on everything from the first to now the engineering is pristine.

#2: Evaluating engineering/production and evaluating musical content are at the least two entirely different things.

#3: #2 as a concept seems to have been lost for the last 15 years and for whatever reason the music is gone and all anyone is concerned with is "how f**king loud can I get the beat"

#4: This message brought to you by the year 1973 and the letter F and U
Do you really come from Prattville?

Just a minority report. Or is this a strictly for hagiography thread?

hmm...wtf does this have to do with hagiography? Do you think Alan Parsons is being touted as a Saint here? I'm almost afraid to ask what you think a well engineered/produced album is?

Actually, hating religious antiquity is a hobby, so I already knew the literal translation. Is there another?

NONONO, you miss the point. I'll bet you $100 he means he uses compressors IN LINE on the bass guitar. Like a chorus stompbox or any other effect. It is part of the recorded signal and a basic structure of the tone. Not engineered in after the fact to control level.
Without a doubt AP means a hardware, outboard compressor. Probably an LA-2A, my guess. While it might be in there to affect tone a bit, there is no doubt though, that the compressor is also being used to even out the levels of the bass player's signal. It's unavoidable.
