Badly tuned radio transmission effect?

I'm working on a mod for a game (System Shock 2) and need to manipulate a spoken "log" into sounding like a transmission from a badly tuned radio. Any ideas on how to accomplish this? EQ/Dist is of course easy, but it's not enough to sound like a bad transmission (white noise / static, voice disapearing etc)

Perhaps there is a plugin for this kind of effect?

I would put a very mild bitcrusher on it, and fade in and out this great little vsti called Spookeys. It's a theremin simulator, but it should sound just like that frequency whooping that happens when a radio is out of range.
Well that's what I would do.

Hi shroom,

my vote also goes for iZotope, but Trash, which has a "badly tuned radio" distortion model (I'm not kidding check here http://www.izotope.com/products/audio/t ... rtion.html! under "faulty").

Have fun

Thanks a lot all, i will definetly check out all the plugs :)

MDA's Combo amp sim has a very good, tweakable radio setting. Add a touch of compression and a little white noise in the background and it's perfect. For a shortwave kind of sound, a light touch of ring mod never hurts.

My first thought was to get one of those cheapo FM transmitters like they sell for MP3 players, and then record it from an old receiver with analog tuning and no PLL. But if Trash does it, nevermind. :)

If you really want to get a decent result, just use radio for friggins sake :)

Heh, they used this *all* the time on ST:TNG for "subspace interference".

That's also the route I'd go, with a bit of decimation. ConcreteFX LoFi (free!) would be well suited to the task.
