Old hardware has these gated reverb presets. You end up with a big space and a tiny tail. But for this to sound good the gate needs a soft close that doesn't stutter. I've got an ol digitech GSP7. Has a great set of gated verb presets that work well for guitar. And I would assume a good gate set at the output of a software verb could do just as well.

ok, thank you
I'm gonna try freeverbtoo
I guess the treshold level should be set at a quite high value with fast attack and soft close is it right?

As : "Reverb & Gate " i would recommand "Ambiance"
As : "Gate reverb " i don't know something really satisfactory as VST, at least on mac ,except maybe some appropriate programming work on "Bouncing ball delay" ?

To hear what this sounds like, listen to anything Phil Collins played drums on in the eighties, particularly his toms.fliffo wrote:what is tecnically? reverb+gate?

Yeah, signiture 80s drum sounds. Of course you can do it with any reverb by putting a gate after it, but remember that only the wet sound is gated. Then you can put a compressor after that if you like for even bigger/stupider sounds.
