Yep. kidding twice.
seriously, I could have looked it up but as usual prefer to ask around here. I actually imagined it was something to do with how you released the key. ie slowly or quickly. Yep. I'm a bit green on such matters. Still, I'm not a condescending prick for a that.

I saw the title of the thread and thought "that's something I've always wondered".jackle&hyde wrote:You are kidding, aren't you?Karbon L. Forms wrote:Was just reading the "just buy instrument" thread. Aftertouch was mentioned.
What is it? I see it bandied about here and in magazines but I've never seen an explanation.
My apologies for not being as all-knowing as you obviously are.
Kinda defeats the object of sharing knowledge when you get an arrogant prat like you putting people down for not knowing something, know what I mean?
No wonder some of us don't ask the questions we'd like to ask.

So can you assign it to pitch bend, play a note then waggle your finger a la guitar?

my understanding of aftertouch is if you are playing the same note and push it a bit a bit harder you get the aftertouch effect coming in which gives the tone more bite or knarl that is independent of volume. My 20 yr. old Roland JX10 has this, which is sometimes a nuisance as having to mantra on not getting excited while playing I find difficult.Less of a nuisance than programming this effect out however. My Roland previously owned by a fanatic was cheap.

Aftertouch can be routed to anything on a synth depending on the model, a popular effect on the Cs80 was to route aftertouch to vca modulation so that when you pressed down you got a controllable tremelo, it became quite a signature sound and a mainstay of all the classic Cs80 patches, theres a few Minimonsta patches i've replicated the effect on if anyones using this synth.fateamenabletochange wrote:my understanding of aftertouch is if you are playing the same note and push it a bit a bit harder you get the aftertouch effect coming in which gives the tone more bite or knarl that is independent of volume. My 20 yr. old Roland JX10 has this, which is sometimes a nuisance as having to mantra on not getting excited while playing I find difficult.Less of a nuisance than programming this effect out however. My Roland previously owned by a fanatic was cheap.

don't know, alot of times I think the aftertouch function when I'm playing 4 on the floor vsti's together is triggering another one of the synths to do it's knarl thing. It is expressed when you very quietly play and then start pushing down, and another instrument comes to the fore.I might be wrong about this.

Its the way your keyboard outputs aftertouch and the way that the vsti's your controlling are wired to recieve, but its not hardwired, you can back it off or change the routing, like i said aftertouch is dependant on how its been programmed.fateamenabletochange wrote:don't know, alot of times I think the aftertouch function when I'm playing 4 on the floor vsti's together is triggering another one of the synths to do it's knarl thing. It is expressed when you very quietly play and then start pushing down, and another instrument comes to the fore.I might be wrong about this.
