My ULTIMATE Reverb ----- UAD-1 Plate 140

OK there was a lot of talk about reverbs lately.
I wanted to show every body the reverb I have been talking about, the UAD-1 Plate 140.
It's a guitar, gated, compressed with a hint of flanger.
Then it goes to the reverb.
Two samples DRY (everything except the reverb)
And WET (same DRY sample + the reverb)
DRY

WET
http://www.andras-shimon.com/MUSIC/WET.mp3
Here is the DRY sample in 24bit wave file as requested(29Mbt)
Right click and save:

OK now all you Reverb lovers of native kind and those of convolution.
Yes you who are mocking DSP reverbs.
Consider this a challenge!
Mimic my sound!
Here are some hints to get you started.
Reverb time is about 2500 ms
No filter on tail (super bright 20Hz-20KHz full on)
WET/DRY 50%/50%
Width - make it as wide and as bright as possible
NO Pre Delay (early reflection)
All recorded in simple 16 bit. (there are some pops and clicks and some low noise of the gate closing, but I have been working with the same file as well)
There is a small piano note in the WET sample in case anybody gets some funny ideas.

post the original wav file - otherwise anyone copying it is stuck with a crummy mp3 - which makes getting high frequency out of it very difficult
I believe every thread should devolve into character attacks and witch-burning. It really helps the discussion.

Sounds good
I was going to do a Stereo Room test and post it here, but there's no point since I should first decode the mp3 then effect it and after that make a new mp3 out of it... So it would lose lots of sound quality during that process. If you could share 24bit wav version of it, then it would be a different matter.
The other thing about me posting Stereo Room version of that sample is that I have no idea what kind of reverb sound you actually like. So if I happen to use high frequency damping on the example, you might judge it bad because of that
(I pretty much always dampen the highs and lows). I mean, what would be the point in imitating your example's sound exactly. No reverb sounds exactly the same and each of them have their own strengths...

Eric, it's an electric guitar, there shouldn't be much going on above 7k (and certainly nothing going on above 10k) just so I'm not so sure a 160kbps MP3 would really be killing the hi-end that much at all. Now if it was a vocal or an acoustic guitar it'd be a different story.
I'm sorry this post wasn't about techno.

Sounds good...and it's 50% wet too? Impressive. Can't think of any native reverb apart from the Princeton one that would sound anything but nasty and artificial at that level.
More and more I'm edging towards buying a DSP card. The dynamics plugins are the ones that mainly tempt me, but to have access to a good EMT plate emulation without the CPU hit of convolution is even more of a tempter (especially as there are very few EMT plate impulses available). If I had the cash, I'd go for a PCM91 (still a possibility), but I can't see I'd either have the cash for a real EMT plate or even be able to get hold of one.
Sure sounds like a decent reverb...all the more so because I generally don't even like or use plates much. But I could be persuaded

for what it's worth, I don't think the Plate 140 is a replacement for a PCM-91 or vice versa. Having both makes a huge difference. 140 on acoustic instruments or solo vocals is tremendous for that traditional plate sound. But, it's not so hot as a lush FXish type of verb. The 91 is great at that. Although I love convolution, it still can't compare with having the real thing. Using a PCM-91 preset in SIR just isn't the same as tweaking the same preset on the real thing. Not even close really.kritikon wrote:Sounds good...and it's 50% wet too? Impressive. Anyhow, the 140 is the best software plate verb I've used so far. I think Dreamverb gets sold short as a space reverb. So, the UAD really has more than just a great plate and $$ compressors. Even the RS-1 reflection engine has some applications.
I still wouldn't cross the 91 off your list though.
If you have to ask, you can't afford the answer

I unleashed the demo a week ago - yes, I was impressed..sounds very homogene to me and I liked the fact that you don´t have hundreds of parameters to edit but good basic sound and efficient variation-possebilities..
definitely not a "perfect for everything"-reverb but I´m preety shure that I´ll buy it..(and yeah, the gui is gorgeous!)

OK tried a couple of takes on this - none are perfect - the ones that are close can be found at www.ericjohnston.dsl.pipex.com/reverbs
both are from the vss3 - and in truth i could have got closer i just got bored tweaking parameters - ps if the reverb drops out in these examples it's cos ive only got the demo for the moment
it sort of the opposite to the plate - there is a total of 150 early/reverb algorhythm combinations and they all have mountains of controls
enjoy

Can I mimick your sound with my EMT 140 plugin?
ps - have you been playing with the different cutoff and modulation settings that aren't in the GUI? The modulation can be used to great effect on some things.
