Here we all are spending good money on gear that gets us great quality sound and there's a generation out there thinking good sound is an 8 bit Mp3. Why can't we get the industry to promote a better end product. Illegal downloading wouldn't look so attractive if you were able to get much higher quality recordings as standard. You wouldn't want a DVD with the audience walking around infront of the picture, why want a track with naff transients? Not as noticable I know but kids are getting use to this as good sound. Casettes were better than this! Or do you disagree?

Casettes weren't better than mp3. Unless you really got off on tape hiss.

The point is recordings are just recordings, not many give a damn about that, they just want music.

Perhaps it's time that the folk spending all that money on gear to give them better sound quality should now feel like chumps.

"Wot? I feckin spent 10000 quid on me new Ultranalogassholetube2000 EQ, and all they wanted was a feckin chewn to fill their day? Feck them the little unschooled bastards. Me product is superior I tells ya wot."

Almost everything I listened to that formed my modern musical taste was on second-generation cassette through 3 inch mini-boombox speakers late at night with the volume way down so as not to bug my parents.

128kbit MP3 is way, way, way better.

Don't do it my way.

Actually, I do think that cassettes sound better than most mp3s coded under 128 kbps. There is more noise, but none of those strange warbly sounds that seem to show up sometimes.

What I DO hate about cassettes is that there are too many things to go wrong with them, they get caught in the mechanism of the player, they fall apart easily, they warp and start making that annoying squeaky sound.

Oh, well.

Ok so ther's a lot of naff electronic music on the net that doesn't deserve much more than an Mp3 and cassettes weren't the greatest invention in the world but this is the 21st century. How about a format as plush as these i-pods. Most of us record in 24 bit even with the most basic of equipment yet we can't even preserve in on CD. Why are we so happy to put up with so little?

And HOW!!

But GI Joe dolls smell even worse!

Not that I ever burn them on purpose or anything.

But not everybody!! That's the point. People still know there's a difference and still go to the cinema. With Mp3s there's so little option.

Actually I don't think CDs are much better and I do go to live gigs. But that doesn't address the issue that the Mp3 is so popular and so CRAP!

you dont think CDs are much better that .mp3 ???

... theyre not perfect but still ... ?!?

(granted ... mp3 is MUCH easier to carry around)

(besides ... as i said ... music <> sound quality)

"The Point" was a 1971 animated movie about non-conformity... er, I mean about a little boy, Oblio, and his dog, Arrow. Oblio is the only round-headed person in a land where everyone has a pointed head. So naturally he's exiled. He travels and becomes hip to stuff and all that.

Harry Nilsson did a catchy little number concerning the hero and his pet, and possibly other songs; I can't remember. Ringo Starr narrated. (There's some history about that but I'll stop here.)

Anyway: that's What's The Point.
