Anyone know how to make the noise in this Gwen Stefani song?

How to do this, that and the other. Share, learn, teach. How did X do that? How can I sound like Y?

There's a bass sound I like in the new Gwen Stefani song, Hollaback Girl. Can anyone suggest an instrument that has a sound like this?

It's like a bass slide. If you have the mp3, it's at :07, :12, :16, and :21.

If not, you can hear it here:

Thanks :)

I'm pretty sure it's an electronic drum sample. You could get a very similar sound on my old Synare electronic drums.

Thank you for the feedback. It sounds like a warped floor tom or something.

It definitely seems like there should be a synth that makes a noise like this.

Does that guy from the Neptunes ever sign on to the KVR forum? :P

In fact, there should be several. The trick is in the synth programming, and the post-processing done in the mix. I think a lot of people tend to forget about all the processing that takes place during recording, and try to look for a synth preset that sounds exactly like their favorite "sound of the week" without the benefit of any external effects, etc. That's probably not a productive way to approach things, but I see it happen fairly often.

If you could find an isolated sample of this sound, I could probably simulate it pretty well on a drum synth. However, having your instrument buried in Gwen's mix, makes things a bit distracting--to say the least.

We really need a "rimshot" emoticon for such moments. :)

You're a nut, vurt.

McLilith, thanks. You're right. I don't think there's anything wrong with seeking a simple solution before getting one's hands dirty with effects and knob tweaks. I know I could probably find something close and manipulate the hell out of it...but like I said before, it sounds like a sound I've heard many times before...so that's why I was reaching for a synth preset.

Any site on the net or sample cd with that bleacher "stomp" like sound featured in this song?

I've searched for that one too!
Good luck.

I'm telling you, those Neptunes are way down. I heard they're clocking ~ a million a track now.

I wonder if you could approximate it with a clap sample played very low in pitch, and add some appropriate signal processing to the output?

If not that, then slam the trunk of a 1962 Cadillac, sample it, tweak the pitch a bit, add some appropriate reverb, and some slapback echo to taste. :)

For that little bit of an extra kick, you could mix in some samples of someone trapped inside the trunk and trying to kick their way out. :D

Simple Triangle Bassbomb with mild overdrive.
Ramp LFO - slow speed setting to AMP
Short Attack / Med Decay / Long release.
Or sample an 808 kick drum with a big decay do the above and play it at desired pitch.
