Using rewire to route Reason into Live 4 used to be a breeze. I'd start up Live, then start up Reason, set one audio input in live to be from Reason and Ta Da! It worked.

But ever since I bought a new midi controller the setup has been a big headache!
Now, when I start Reason after starting Live, I get a warning box saying "Reason couldn't set up the control surfaces properly", and the midi controller doesn't work from Reason!

I found a way around it by first going into Live preferences and disabling all input and output devices, then going into reason and activating my midi controller, then going BACK into Live and re-activating the input and output devices, but there must be a way to simply fix the problem!

Can anybody help me?
I have read the manuals, and the Reason one, especially, seems to hint at a solution, but I'm not smart enough or experienced enough to figure it out.

Again, Help please!

Oh yeah, I forgot to tell you an important part! When I go into Reason preferences to see what's wrong with my controller, the error message given for why it cannot be activated is: "Reason can't open the MIDI port selected for the control surface. Please make sure that the drivers for the MIDI interface or device are properly installed, and check that no other program uses the MIDI port."

So, I assume my problem is that Live is using the MIDI port. How can I get my midi controller to work by Rewiring Reason into Live the way I used to be able to?

Does the controller work fine when both apps are run standalone (not in rewire mode)?

This is what you are doing wrong.
Start Ableton Live.
When the message Reason couldn't set up etc etc appears click ok and let Reason start up.
Now set up X number of midi channels for X number of Reason devices and set them to Midi Channel 1.
Then set up rewire Audio input channels for the rewire outs.
For convenience sake I tend to pair 1 midi channel with 1 rewire audio channel and then rename the track numbers in Session view to Reason.Mid1 and Reason.Aud1 etc etc going up successively.
Now in Live set Midi rewire channel MONITOR TO ON.
And set SEND MIDI TO - X/Y/Z device in Reason.
Set corresponding Audio Channel to Monitor on and RECIVE audio from Reason output 1/2 , 3/4 etc etc.
Play Midi keyboard in Live tweak knobs etc and voila.
Easy to record the midi in Live also and then render anymidi clips to audio via the corresponding audio rewire channel if needs be.
Works great with Combinators as you can use the clip envelopes in Live to control parameter automation tweaks of the Combi interface etc etc ...
If this has confused you PM me your e.mail addy and I'll email you a template .als file.

that seems to work! thanks.

It's odd that the solution you present is so much different from the setup I had had working before. I think your way must be the "right" way, and I had just been ignorantly doing what had been working for me.

nice explaination of both problem and solution! :)

I wasn't sure if my explanation was clear enough or not. :D .
