I used a cocus wood chanter for the basis of this next sound font – though the reed was the main thing I was after in this creation so the font has the vibrations, but a much smoother sound than the actual chanter itself. :D

For more info and the font itself – this is the link

Hello Spe3D

Thanks for posting this. I'm going to go digging into to all of these new interesting sound fonts this evening.

This one sounds especially cool!

Hi! One, :D

Thank you – yes this is very different from my other fonts :) , in particular the construction – plus a few tweaks to make it playable without effects – though all the fonts I do have effect use in mind.

It’s a bit of a bigger download – so I have done a quick small mp3 demo to get an idea of what it sounds like (I have added extra reverb) mp3 demo size 700 odd KB

Thank you Herman :) , I checked out your chanter, the raw product sounds like the same chanter as I use – though you have much larger lungs than I :) trying to get the constant stream over the reed is the trick, this you have mastered imo. I notice you done an ethnic harmonica too. I the other day done a Koch Chromatic, the trick there being to play each hole at different velocities without triggering the other notes. I am not sure if I will post this as a soundfont or as wave files yet – quite a large sonic range, great fun to sample :)

Cheers kevvvv, more to come in the future too :)

Best regards,

Peter

Hehe - thanks Peter :)

I'm a really tall guy, so I guess I benefit from having large lungs :D My woodwind playing goes back to the age of 8, playing recorder.
I do have to watch out with those long notes though - cause these double reeds can give you anything from a headache to meningitis. The long notes are usable as drones, and I still want to loop them. My Chanter is made out of Palisander btw.

The next RAW instrument will be either a Chinese Shengh or a Chines Shawm (I think it's called a Suo-na), either way it'll be Chinese :)

I'll be watching the forum for your new instruments.

EDIT: Just found a page about the Suona:

I think I should practice a few more weeks first hehe :D

Thank you Herman, :)

Yes double reeds can be one noisy source if played for two long, one of the good things about the chanters is the ability to circular breath due to the air reservoir in the chamber – but this can be a problem if the chamber leaks air, apparently hemp thread is used to make the joins air tight between the sections, the mouthpiece, the reed seating and where the two halves join. Not that I am any good at the circular breathing with the chanter, get all giddy still :)

I learned the clarinet when younger – the recorder was too shrill for me the way I played it, I still have the old recorder I used to have, might sample that next and pop it into a font.

Have fun with the Suona, looks like a great instrument to play :)

I will keep an eye out for your creations in the future.

Peter

You should try taking off the reedcap and playing it with the reed only partialy in your mouth. Very interesting timbre, and much less lungwork...

Along those lines Voidoid, I have been experimenting making my own reeds out of various non/partially absorbent materials. (also been popping reeds into the opening of very long copper pipes with custom made reed holders :D )

I did that. You can bend notes more easier, which sounds pretty cool, cause by moving the reed you can create weird flangy/phasy FX with it. I didn't experience much difference in physical effort compared to regular playing though.

Peter - does your chanter also have a plastic reed?

Hi! Herman,

This was a plastic reed, though you can get different types of reed and spring them to make playing easier particularly if they are absorbent – but its only a tempory thing, unless I guess the reed is placed directly in the mouth.

Peter
