Download the Stereo-Widening-Thingie

In response to the thread, "Transient Detector," we have developed a simple stereo-widening plugin, based on some common techniques/tricks. It might be a bit cheese-ball, but some of your out there might get something out of it.

This is a very preliminary alpha. It is provided sans GUI, and we haven't even settled on a name for it yet. (Please keep this in mind: the current name is Orban, as it is based on Orban's 222a stereo effect. Of course, this must eventually be changed, to avoid trademark enfringement. So on the very off-off-off chance that anyone from Orban is reading this, please don't sue us! ;))

If you have a good name for this plugin, please email us. Your contribution will be remembered.

Otherwise, the plugin should be pretty stable in all hosts.

NOTE: the current download package contains 2 versions. One is a simplified version, with 2 parameters, and one is the "advanced" (Adv) version, with additional controls for the tweakheads out there.

Parameters

- Delay: controls the amount of mid delay used to implement the Haas Effect. This creates the illusion that the cound is coming more from the sides than the middle, thereby "widening" the image. (google: "haas effect" or "precedence effect") This operates independently from the Modulation effect, and can be bypassed with a delay of 0.02ms (should read "OFF").

- Modulation: controls the amount of side modulation effect. Effectively makes the sides seem louder, but in a dynamic way, without sounding muddy. (hopefully.)

(advanced parameters for Modulation effect)

- Attack: sidechain attack. (default = 20ms)

- Release: sidechain release. (default = 100ms) There is also an auto-release algorithm that attempts to smooth the release.

- Average: sidechain averaging time constant used for long RMS measurement. (default = 400ms) This affects the behavior of the auto-release. (NOTE: the sidechain also detects a short RMS measurement (5ms) which approximates the averaging of the human ear.)

Please post/email your feedback. We thrive on feedback, so keep it coming!

Thanks for checking this out. Hope you like it!

What about Aurban? Or Binorban? Or Binormalizer? Or Orbander? Orbane? VirtOrban? Haasterical? TwOrban? Tell me when to stop. Will try the plug soon. Thanks.

to me, "TwOrban" is a very nice Danish fellow who developes his own plugins and frequents this forum. ;)

Both versions crash Orion's Plugchecker and crash FL Studio upon loading the effect. No luck here. :?

Version 18 still crashes Orions Plugchecker and FL Studio upon load. What are the system req's for this plugin? I'm using Win98 on my test machine.

Might just be a Win98 problem then.

It works fine on XP, cubase VST 4. Utalizing a delay form??? The attack, release and average don't seem to make any impact with me???. As you increase the effect it does compress/lowdness it a bit??? Im one of those who beleive the gui is important because it gives it an identity and a understanding of what it is. Good measurement markings I think are realy important on a gui.
The more the merryer makes it more interesting.
I do have this problem with my old recordings, the fact that they don't match up, because they are recorded whith different methods, and I wanted to make a complitation disc, though I don't realy want to spend anytime on them, but I do use them to experiment with things on them.

Cubase SX 1.06 on XP doesn't recognize the plugs .. :-(
