So I've been thinking about rearranging my music space to make it more conducive to writing and recording. I've realized that things are a little un-ergonomic as they stand. I would appreciate any wisdom you might have gained from having your desk/chairs/monitors/screen etc. in different arrangements.

Basically, I need my five-octave keyboard (a 1985 Ensoniq ESQ-1, in case you're interested), my computer keyboard and mouse all within reach.

Also, and this is going to sound really dumb, but what kind of chair do you sit in? I have a chair on rollers, but on a carpeted floor, so it takes a bit of effort to adjust my position towards the playing keyboard. (Plus I'm always having to move the headphone wires out of the way before moving the chair! It's really annoying!) I thought about getting one of those plastic floor covers so the chair would roll more easily, but then I thought it would get annoying when I start rolling away from the keyboard as I'm playing it! (Do they make chairs with "brakes"?)

OK, there's really no way to make a post about studio furniture and "how roll-y should my chair be?" without sounding dumb...but maybe you understand where I'm coming from here...

Please take this blabbering post as just an invitation to discuss studio ergonomics for the keyboardist/computer-based-composer. Oh, and I'm on a budget, so I'm going to have to make do with non-professional furniture....but I'll nail pieces of wood together if I have to...

I've got keyboard to my left. I can play and work the mouse with my right. I've got rollers on carpet. Even if I had wood floors, I'd want a rug to stop the roll.

I like having a three tier desk with a rollout (typing) keyboard/mouse tray, piano keyboard above that, monitor on top shelf. I invested $60 in a nice (comfortable) leather office chair a couple years ago which was a very worthwhile decision. It has rollers, i have a berber rug (carpet remnant) over a terrazzo floor and I'd have to say my mobility/stability are fairly well balanced. Maybe I can get a picture up tommorrow. Anyhow, I definitely recognize the conduciveness of optimizing your work environment through furniture upgrading. So, not a bad inquiry at all.
Ideas are bulletproof... I am not.
