CPU usage with Cubase SX

Okay...I have a Toshiba Satellite 3.06ghz, 1GB of RAM and when I have a project open in Cubase with Absynth 3, Tassman 4.0, two other 'smaller' VSTis and 3-4 VST effects on each open my CPU usage is hovering between 90 and 100%.

I'm quite new to Cubase and was wondering if this is normal. Am I suppose to only be working on two synth parts at a time ? Are Tassman and Absynth usage hogs ??

Post

yes, especially tassman ...

Post

You probably will need to use the "Freeze" function, which will free up your CPU... or else bounce tracks to audio.

Post

depends on patches you are using but usually Tassman and Absynth take a lot of CPU power.

Post

Not to mention that Cubase SX is amazingly cpu and resource hungry in general.

Post

wow this is wierd, i was just about to post and ask if anyone else has my problem ( my cpu being like 35% usage, when nothing is happening.. with ALL vsts off and it's in stop state) whats wrong with it??

Post

If the vstis are simply open I think ist NOT normal.
If the vstis are playing many notes then it depends of how many voices, etc.
When I open SX3 my cpu usage is 2/3% only.

As I have said in a previous post, its not normal.
You have not posted anything about your system specs but...
Maybe you have a very small latency? Or maybe something is wrong with your system.

Post

Well, percentage comparissons are meaningless unless you give the specs of your system

Sounds like youve got some utils or stuff running in the background.

Post

what audio interface do you have?
also this happened to me when i forgot that i had messed with the 'expert' settings and had it set to prerender 6 seconds.. lol..

Post

cubase sx 2/3 is a immense cpu hog compared to the old sx1 engine. but i would also say that your cpu peaks are definitely not normal.

Post

yes i agree..

I'm not totally sure why its doing it, i got utils in the background downloading - but i've closed them before to check if its them and in all cases it wernt.

The problem i get is, it stalls. like - i'd be playing back a midi with a vst synth assigned and some vst effects over the top and suddenly it will freeze, and i'll hear (for a glimpse) the original vst without any effects.

and also constatly (right now) my cpu perfomance monitor in cubse sx2 is around 40%.. and im not doing anything.

i've got an amd athlon 3200+ using xp sp1, 1gb 3200 ram, 2 hardrives ( both 7200 rpm with 8mb cache )with KX asio drivers fo my audigy 1. i did have it at 5ms but as i was reciving problems (hoping it would cure it ) i put it to 10ms, but it still does the same.

i'm not sure if you've heard of it but the athlon 64bit, it has this dynamic FSB.. which means when the cpu is in use it then puts the fsb up dynamically -- so it becomes much faster (right now because cubase sx2 is using a lot of the cpu power, its running at 1.81ghz )

anyway, i don't tihnk it has anything to do with that - i think there's a problem with a vst or something i've installed which works together inconjunction with cubase sx2, because it hasn't always been like this.

i think i'll just have to sort it out on my own, but will (reinstalling) cubase sx2 delete my projects etc?

Post

it will definately not delete your projects - recordings - vsts - or preferences - not sure about etc..

Post

Did you download that lastest patch? It was supposed to fix some abnormal resource pulls or something.
