I'm sure not many here have heard of the Rheostatics, but they're the band that's had the most impact on me... their influence informing musical choices, taste in art, and literature to which I may not have otherwise been exposed.

This video isn't their absolutely finest hour, but it's not bad, and it features an army of Herb Tarleks, so that can't be all bad. ;) If you have broadband, check it out here:

Otherwise, see it at their official website:

Yes, quite good stuff, eh? Funny, though-- I have the album that PIN is from and I've never listened to it. I bought it when it came out (without even having heard it) and the first couple tracks didn't do it for me.

Now, normally I take that as a GOOD sign-- when I'm challenged enough by music that I have to listen a few times to enjoy it, it bodes well for the album's longevity. But this time, for some reason, I never got around to really listening much to it. I'm always buying CDs, so something else just kept taking my fancy.

After visiting the website earlier tonight and seeing those videos, it's time for me to dig out that album again, plus their Music Inspired by the Group of Seven that I've only rarely listened to.

It'll be like re-discovering my favourite band. :D

I noticed there's a video of "Shaved Head" which is one of their all-time best songs. Unfortunately, Martin Tielli (the singer for that particular song) took off his Steinberger pretty early on... usually that song is punctuated with his brilliant guitar work, but this time they left guitar chores to Dave Bidini (who did a fine job, though). Worth a listen and look-see anyhow, but not quite as magnificent as the album version. :D

I gotta get some Pacific Time Sleep here but I wanted to say that listening to this music has made me happy but sad at the same time. The reason being is that it reminds me of the fact that I am getting older and the youth I had is now only a memory.

I know I can't go back but if I could, I tell you, I would have stayed out in the Sun just a little more longer and I would have put off on growing up so fast. Sigh . . what did we know back then???

Now as I sit here in the present and I see the world in the state that it is in, I wonder if it is still possible to dream for a better day?

Tommorow, I'm gonna pick up some Edgar Allen Poe then I'm gonna off myself guantonmo bay style.

Good night.

I used to be a big Rheostatics fan, but lost interest roughly around the time of the Group of 7 disc and Introducing Happiness (I think marked by the departure of the first drummer. Don Kerr just never did it for me).

I still listen to Melville and Whale Music now and again. And they always had a geat live show.

While nothing will ever recapture Melville and Whale Music's magic for me, I am surprised that Introducing Happiness left you cold. ;) That's an absolutely fantastic album full of brilliance and musicality.

It doesn't contain anything quite like "It" or "California Dreamline", mind you.. but it DOES have "Take me in your Hand," "Me and Stupid," and their wonderful cover of "One More Colour".

:D

I have to admit, I too preferred Dave Clark as a drummer. Wonder what he's up to these days...

Dave Clark's in Dinner is Ruined. That's why he left.

I like bits on Introducing Happiness, but that's the problem, it's all just a collection of bits strung together. Agreed One More Colour is great, I like it better than the Jane Siberry original even, but I found for every 30 seconds of the album I liked, there would be another 90 seconds I couldn't stand.

Fair enough. There were certain tracks that really had to grow on me, like Onilley's Strange Dream or Jesus Was Once a Teenager, Too. But now, I can't think of a song I don't like.

Dinner is Ruined... are they any good?

Yeah, that was pretty cool. :)

Haven't heard them in a while, I assume they are still around. Sort of like Truman's Water for the granola/blues set. (what Rheos do for art rock, Dinner is Ruined do for improv noise).
