Does anyone here ever get that spiritual awakening that says the mysteries of the universe and the meaning of life could be symbolized in terms of digital audio and signal flow? AND I'M NOT EVEN HIGH YET!

If you think of every transition in life, every transition in society, every flow of possibility in the universe as a sine wave or any other wave that would accuratley represent life, societal transitions, the fluctuation from one extreme to the next(positive to negative portion of said wave)....you realize that every thing that exists in nature and in the universe has transition periods that could be represented by waveforms. Understanding this, these waveforms may be altered to human liking. How? The same way we alter oscillator waves in a sythesizer. Every module that oscilator goes through has its own set conditions and variables that may also be represented by waveforms. The nexus where that oscillator wave and the conditions of the module interact is the point where the module has "an effect" on the oscillator.
If one were to substitute -oscillator wave- for -transitions in life, society, etc...-, what would the corresponding -modules- be?
Other transitions?? OK NOW I'M HIGH..

Well,.. I suspect metaphores can be derived from anything. That said, I think we (musicians, programmers, reviewers, etc...) are really just dealing with information, that in some way, from a certain perspective, can be related to our experience of being a human. In otherwords, I suspect how we choose to process, and deal with information, defines us, in some way.
The practice of rearranging information, and examining it (or listening to it) from both microscopic and macroscopic perspectives is one that has been adopted by a number of current historians. Perhaps granular synthesis could be considered a tool for examing information from the perspective of a historian. The Foucault effect on sound synthesis.
Randomization, from a John Cage like perspective, takes on an element of religous purpose. And, we're definately living in a time of resurging interest in religion. So, is that related to all the randomization features in plugins?
Is any popular invention just the externalization or manifestation of some sort of collective conciousness?
I dunno, maybe.

I was playing Star Trek pinball once and got some mega-multiball and thought I had an insight into the Big Bang, but I was high.

Yes allofdrab! I think you're on to something with randomization. I'm not exactly sure if "electronic randomization" is truly random, considering predefined algorithms go into coming up with random values(I'm not sure about this one since I'm not a vst programmer). But I think there's something to be said about human interest in "randomness". This is my reasoning why the random factor and the infinate factor has a religious significance. Consider this:science says the only true way to achieve a truly random product is if the source has an infinate "pool" to pick from. But what exactly in nature is infinate? Well above all is the size of the universe inward and outward(macroscopicly AND microscopicly).(or god, depending on your personal beliefs.)...but this is for another topic... Anyway, lets say the only think truly infinate is the universe. The only thing we humans can possibly relate to in terms of infinity is our own imaginations. Think of all those times(in the studio or not) when unwritten songs just fly through your head from seemingly nowhere. How exactly do you get "something" from "nothing"? I've always had the notion that "stream of consiousness" was actually was some sort of "stream of the universe" passing somehow through my head and filtered through all my past experiences with music and all my musical influences coloring this "stream of universe" that is somehow passing through my brain. Now here's where the randomization comes in: if the universe is the only thing that is truly random, does the universe somehow choose which notes get played, say when you have the random arpegiated synth line? They say say there is no coincidences, only synchronicity...And why do random phenomenon seem to influence a type of order in the human mind?(you wouldn't belive this, but i can hear music when i listen to white noise, and I can "see" objects when watching static on tv...this blew my mind when i heard that tv static is actually neutrinos from outer space). Almost leads one to believe that when you are influenced by the infinate(or psuedo-infinate)act of creativity, what's really happening is the infinate universe being filtered through a finate and structured organ(the brain). Any thoughts on this?

The title of this reminded me of a song I did years ago called 'Better Living Through Speed'... It's on some comp CD out there in musicland, and I almost totally forgot about that one.
(Maybe if I heard it today I'd realise why I forgot about it so quick?
)
Well that's it for my horn tootin'... Oh wait, here comes a fart!

I've learned Yoga and I still can't toot my own horn.
