Noobie questions - trigger for Software synths?

OK - I'm new to all of this and think it's great!! However, I'm mostly into synths which are - for lack of better terms - self-triggering, like the TS404Beta1 or the Saccara. You turn them on and they go - no need for a MIDI keyboard.

My question is - is there anything like a signal generator or some sort of VST module which will act like a "constantly-on" or "hold" trigger which will send a signal to all of the other synths (VST or not) which are normally driven by a keyboard?

I'm not even sure what the proper term is for this, so I can't really explain it. Maybe this is what's referred to as a sequencer or sustain?
