I need a professional gate (softplug) to cut reverb tails. I had a free one once, but it wasn't that good.

What constitutes a 'professional' gate?
Is it a specific feature set, a brand name, a price-point, a long list of ostensibly famous users, or some mysteriously indefinable characteristic we're gonna have to guess before you'll let us help you?

Haven't tried many but Kjaerhus GAC-1 seems to work great for my needs.
BTW it's a whole channel strip capable of many other things as well.

Yes, I agree. The Gate in GAC-1 does its job really well. It's a lot more algo behind these 2 knobs.AndrewSimon wrote:Haven't tried many but Kjaerhus GAC-1 seems to work great for my needs.

Although it's a little bit pricy just for use of the gate, but it's a swiss army knife for shaping all kind of sounds.

Slim Slow Slider's FREE autogate (yes, it is a bit misleading name) is very nice gate. I think it's the best free one that I have come across. All these plugins are marvelous.

Professional gate?
Gates are one of the very few gadgets that I really don't give a complete arse whatever plugin or h/w I use. A gate is pretty well a gate, whoever makes it. Especially if all you're using it for is absolute gating. You drop below the threshold and it cuts out the signal...how easy can it get? Any freebie pretty well ever made will do that job very well.
If you're going to use it for fancier things like envelope shaping or expansion, then I can see the point of a good one. I've used Dbx ones, Behringer ones, commercial plugins and free plugins - and at simple gate settings for gating a reverb tail - guess what?...they all sound exactly the same (no surprise there, then)
MDA made a gate years ago that is every bit as good as new ones. Migagate is one I vaguely remember. Personally I use the included one in the dynamics section of Cubase (which is frequency sensitive, so it's very good for other things too...) Floorfish is another one...
Or...as you obviously think a "professional gate" will sound different, you can probably spend a few hundred $$$s for a Waves one. You see...the Waves 1s and 0s in the coding that simply block the signal are probably written in ancient Sanskrit, as opposed to modern arabic 0s and 1s - so you get very flashy 1s and 0s. Waves silence must have character, eh? As opposed to common every day silence, which is characterless

"gate" ????
have you ever met any "professionals?" i doubt it
takes more than gates to keep that ravenous, murderous lot out.
i suggest somethnig more along the lines of gasoline filled moats
