Well, they have one advantage over mellotrons . . . the sounds don't stop after 7 or 8 seconds. They are continuous loops on the optical disc, so they have infinite sustain. That's what freaked everyone out about the vocal samples used by KW on Radioactivity. They just keep going and going, unlike mellotron sounds, which must be constantly re-keyed in order to get sustained sounds.

Patrik Moraz actually had a dual keyboard version of the Orchestron.

Seems like I read that some of them would allow you to load more than one disc at a time, overlapping them to get layered samples. Might be wrong there, though.
The sustain and no "rewind time" is definitely an advantage, but there was no "attack" either, which I guess could be cool or not cool. I would love to have one either way. I like the fact that you got Autoharp like chords built in though

Okay, i feel stupid but how do I set it up so I can record my jam sessions on this virtual optigon directly into a .wav file?
-this reminds me of a few days ago when I was thinking about what If there was something like laserdisc but for audio. turns out there is.
EDIT: Oh also, how do I get the sound to stop? I exited out and forgot to turn off the loops? now their just blaring away with no end.

I think I'm just gonna have to shell out a few hundred one day for one of these things on ebay then just collect the discs as I come across them. If I ever get it though, I'll try and find a VST developer who'd be willing to code a freebie virtual optigan (as I have no coding skills myself) using whatever I can sample.
I'm sorry this post wasn't about techno.

S_A_P I saw that one, unfortunately I'm on the East Coast and this guy's in Washington. The last two that went up were local pick-up only and both were in neighboring states (CT, and PA) but I missed out on both before bidding closed.

funkadil, this isn't really like a laserdisc per se, and it doesn't record. Think of it more like a toy organ/mellotron/sampleplayer. It just plays back discs with prerecorded sounds like a sampler does, only it sounds old and crackly like if a mellotron were played on a 75 year old vinyl instead of tape.

Yeah I know, I was just referring to the fact that they are both analog optical discs. Oh and about the recording thing, I'm talking about the virtual java optigon, not a real optigon.

I just remapped the sound files in my sampler, instead!
