Hi I'm looking for something I can use in more or less real time to shift a looped echo by an octave or more. The pitchshifters I have MDA detune and Madshifta don't quite seem to do it. I'm looking for a smooth glide of the whole echoing piece.

Could be a free vst (I can't see one) or a Reaktor ens. Maybe this can be done with a delay??? (I used to do this with the old Wem copicats)

Try the Native Granulator in Audiomulch!

Thanks but I was hoping for some free vst or maybe something for reaktor :)

NTrack has a reasonable PitchShift included in the download (v4.04 will do). It's DX, so depending on your host, you might need a wrapper. The GUI is nothing to write home about, but it will allow good control over L/R or lock both channels.

For non-realtime i would use the best pitch shifter in Cubase SX. It's asking a lot for realtime pitch shifter to do more than an octave without sounding really bad. Another possible idea - if you are triggering midi sounds that is - is to look for a midi delay to trigger alternative samples or a patch of your original sounds or synth.

For relatively low cost, Audio Damage's Discord is fantastic.

For free, there aren't that many, and the quality will be grainy. Either Madshifta and Shivashifta, or KTGranulator, or Ioplong's Splonki and Slifty (Slifty does 2 octaves. Both are based on buffers, so won't do real-time exactly.)

Xoxos has Smokey Joe, which is a formant shifter. Not sure how many octaves, and it is fairly noisy. I also saw another one made with Synthedit that did only 1 octave, tuned to semi-tones, but can't remember where it was (had a light blue interface if anyone else remembers).

I'm sure either pd or Csound in their VST wrappers could do something, but I'm not sure how good for real-time either would be (Does Csound in the wrapper even work realtime?)

For Reaktor there's MisterShifter (by John Nowak - five parallel pitch shifters, +/-60 semitone range), and Da Blackbird, which is like a pitch shifting delay.

I forgot some of the phase vocoder pitchshifters. There's nullpointer's Z-SpShift and Richard Dobson's pvtransp or any of the old ShinyFX plugins if you can find them (SpectralMonkeyage, phazVoc). Personally I still like Ricahrd Dobson's best for results, but it is only 1 octave.

will this work?

I can modify it further if this is a foot in the door for you. Just lemme know.

ok, I tried Sickle's ens and I think it does exactly what I wanted..only it doesn't sound the way I expected! Maybe I'm going for too much shift or that I can't do it smoothly enough or it maybe due to the nature of the sounds I'm using in that they need to be longer. I'll have a look at that. I've determined it needs to be at the end of the chain as I'm looking for a pitch shift of the original sound plus the slow looping delay and a more normal delay.

I'm finding that with the delay and feedback turned to zero I seem to get something other than pitch shift, but I need to try it on a simpler signal chain than the one I'm running now. will try it further tonight.

... I've used this DX (freeware) to do what you are wanting to do. Though obviously there are differences in the specific sample/sound, so your milage may vary.

The plug-in allow you adjust sample Pitch (while preserving sample length), Tempo (change sample length but preserve pitch) or change both Pitch and Tempo using post process high quality resampler (Speed) without preserving pitch and sample length.

Input parameters are: Pitch in semitones (cents) in range ± 4 octaves, Tempo in percents (in range 15..999 %), BPM or sample time in seconds, Speed in percents or semitones. For precise Tempo change and avoid artifacts an accuracy parameter is available. All parameters have two tweak modes: draft, where you able tweak parameters fast using GUI wheels and precise (calculator) mode, where you input precise values into edit boxes.
