Well its raining here – so I thought as people were interested in rain, bells and the quality of mini disk recordings – I made a quick sample of the ambiance around here this very morning. :D

This was done on my mini disk set-up (type-R) going into a portable mixer, from which I ran a couple of standard mics, one set to ground level – the other sky, slight panning, high gain.

Here you can download an MP3 that is 3MB in size

If you would like this exact render but as a 22MB 16 Bit 44.1 stereo wave file in a 18MB zip follow this link

EDIT:

A few done this morning – not raining, three short mp3’s if anyone wants the waves of these – let me know and I will zip them and put them up at the auditorium

Different mic placement for these two at ground level pointing 45 degrees towards the sky – 5 meters apart – not a heavy pan in the mixer – recorded onto mini disk (Type-R) (unfortunately we get the benefit of distant traffic on the main road – but that’s the ambiance for today) strangely I captured a distant gun shot this morning too may post that later, must be all the stress of the elections

I don't know how much you're experience, but you would make a great use of some plugins....

i would recommand a good denoiser, a good stereo spreader and an enhancer as good as like psp mixtrebble, this to increase some psychoacoustic aspects without altering too much the original take...

Thank you Nperez and Genetic, more to follow along these lines, coastal, wind, heaver rain etc.

Krakatu – this ‘ambient’ sample is ‘exactly’ how I intend it to be – if others what to chop it up – boost it, spread it etc. they can.

Ah! A fellow minidisc-rain-sampler ;-)
My mic setup was super cheesy but got interesting results. If you're interested: two basic condenser(?) mics back to back facing outwards from each other at about the distance of the width of the average human head. Made for a neat stereo field, when listening with headphones.

rbet, thank you – as it happens I live in a semi rural place, a small village near the south coast of the UK, it is pretty much surrounded in woodland, plus at night sometimes its possible to hear owls etc. these are something else I will try to capture – no good if its windy for that as the leaves in the trees rustle too much. The owl will get caught in digital one day.

Jace-BeOs, yes this recording was not intended as a wide stereo field, the mic placement was one directly above the other with very slight panning, it was just to capture a small amount of ambiance. My portable mixer can take upto eight mics – five of these can be phantom powered – so it stereo field and depth was needed then more mics can be used – one ground, one sky, and the other two mid left and mid right.

Thanks Krim, I will do the birds again when its not raining – there is quite a varied collection here, and just one bird can sing many alternative notes.

Thanks GruvSyco,

appreciate the feedback :)

Thank you Bo,

I will up the files a bit later today :) , I am not sure if I will continue with the ambient sampleing after this – but will continue with the soundfonts and waves of diverse sounds, like the glass, drill motors etc. I think the ambient stuff must have too much noise and/or not needed. Nice to listen to sound from different parts of the world though, in different areas of the country.

Best regards,

Peter
