If speed (or lack thereof) is no issue, I'd say Merzbow - Ananga Ranga. Or some of the nastier Whitehouse stuff.
I second (early) Swans, and add Sunn0))).

I always think of that one as extremely fast, and of 'digital' period Merzbow as slower for some reason.tetraplan wrote:If speed (or lack thereof) is no issue, I'd say Merzbow - Ananga Ranga.
People who come from a metal background might prefer to start with Pulse Demon over Venereology.
There's also the Francisco Lopez death metal extravaganza on Alien8 (can't remember the untitled number offhand) - a huge, dense collage of blast beats and out-of-sync riffing.
BTW, nice to see you back, Erik.

lamb of god always helps.... if you're really in a special mood you could try some Nasum. soilent green were always nice too, or even the first superjoint ritual cd (not the 2nd one... dear god not the 2nd one.)
i find it helps to listen to a lot of non-"hardcore" music most of the time. helps keep heavy music heavy, keeps the perspective. if i listen to depeche mode, peter gabriel, or vnv nation for a week straight and then throw in lamb of god... well, you get the idea

Hmm. I always feel that somehow those pounding percussion-sounds are completely overwhelmed by the layers of harsh noise. All sense of speed and rhythm obliterarted, cleansed.dystonia_ek wrote:I always think of that one as extremely fast, and of 'digital' period Merzbow as slower for some reason.tetraplan wrote:If speed (or lack thereof) is no issue, I'd say Merzbow - Ananga Ranga.
On one hand, it's stupidly fast (could be, what, 300 bpm?), on the other hand, it's timeless.
Pulse Demon is really insanely fscking hard, if I remember well.People who come from a metal background might prefer to start with Pulse Demon over Venereology.
Sounds cool. There's also the Francisco Lopez death metal extravaganza on Alien8 (can't remember the untitled number offhand) - a huge, dense collage of blast beats and out-of-sync riffing.
