so, very few people around here are actually aware of their genre(s). I would have thought that after having composed for 3-5-8+ years one would concentrate on a specific genre or 2. Is everyone really making avant garde/experimental stuff? Or started out recently? Or just being funny?

Personally, I probably do a few to many genres but I'm aware of the genres though.
Breakbeat, Goa Trance, RnB, Orchestral (film score-ish).

Genres create artificial boundaries. Genre confusion is more interesting.

genres are decided by listeners not musicians/artists
we jus do what we do then some other gimp gives it a name :)

genre obsessed???
If somebody asks me to come along to a concert, I'd like to know what music I might hear. Same when in a music shop. If you like jazz you go to their jazz section and if it's Dance you go to......(have a guess).

I just like to know what to expect that's all.

genre schmenre it only serves to make it easier for record lables to ram the next "big thing" down yer throat. Further it restricts an artists growth since the record company will shelve yer album if you "switch genres". Just ask fiona apple- her album was shelved since she didnt make her 3rd album like her 1st 2...

My spies inform me that xoxos wrote:

Not exactly; "alternative" means (as it always has) "we're not going to let our lack of talent get in the way" and the "progressive" part refers to our high delusions of adequacy.
And later, xoxos wrote:even tho during the day you're a stockbroker but at night, you read french symbolist poetry

:p
Heh. Actually, a home-maker with omnivorous, if voracious, reading habits.
Wait... loot _then_ burn? D'oh!

But what if the music just doesn't fit into one of these well established genres?

I first made up the genre "Power Baroque". Then I thought I made up a new genre "Progressive Electronic Rock" (or "Progtronic Rock"), but I think someone else might have came up with that first (I think some guy who won Keyboard's Unsigned Artist of the year several years in a row).

Maybe that is good in that one day I might be able to point to a real genre for my music.

In the mean time, I suppose its a variant of progressive rock.
