What kind of 'battle' samples do you require? Shots, bombs, explosions?? You'll have to be more specific...

I'd like to grab a bunch of samples from the Prelinger archive myself.

This may be a dumb question, but how would I go about extracting audio from avis and mpegs? Preferably, a free way.

Thanks.

Avi's and most .mpgs: Virtual Dub or Virtual DubMod. Make sure you have the right codecs on board.
Audio from .mpgs can also be extracted with QuickTime Pro (which isn't free).
Winamp can do it too, I believe (too lazy to check).

my favorite way of extracting from mpegs/AVI is to download Goldwave(yes the canadian audio editor!), open file... open the movie file and it just opens the soundtrack.
a while back i bought a program that extracts audio from DVDs which was kind of a waste of money cause if i was more patient i could've done this for free.

here's the little bugger i got... worst purchase of my life.
