What makes a drumtrig plugin great?

Yeah, that's a bloody good question ain't it? heh :)

What features should a good drumtrig plugin have? I mean of course it needs some sort of gate to help avoid trigging on background noise and decreasing the number of double trigs. And perhaps a bandpass filter to narrow down the frequency of the attack in the audio stream. Then it should have some decent velocity sensitivity and let you compress the velocity and decide what MIDI note to transmit the trig signal to.

Some other cool things could be layers I guess, where you could set so harder hits call in a second layer of samples. One could also go for built in multisamples much like drumagog but I'm really guessing most people use their fave samplers anyway.

So, do you have a feature you wanna see in a trig plugin? Shout! And why am I asking? Well cause I wanna try making one for fun, and while I'm at it, it'd be nice to start out with some good ideas right away.

So let's get the ball rolling shall we? :)

Missing features from most.

Sequencer- I think the micro tonic one is the best I've seen (especialy the pattern chaining) except I would add the ability to send the midi out for using alone or layering. The more types of rolls and flams possible the better. The more groove/swing types the better. Allow 3/4 visualization too. Alolow MIDI note triggering instead of CC's (so you could also play more than one pattern at once)

Different types of envelope curves for both attack and decay. Sometimes you need an log curve some times you want an exponetial.

Apply effects to samples and save as a copy. Sometimes you want to compress a drum track but sometimes you want to play a compressed drum sample (they sound totally different). I wish I could do my EQ/Compression/Gate on a sample and save it right in the drum machine. Sounds differnt than dynamically applied effects and saves CPU.

Mute groups. Alt Groups (instead of muting if something in alt group is playing the alt layer will trigger instead.) this is good for left/right hand re-creation and so the ear doesn't hear the same sample at the same time (hit the snare twice in a row and you hear two differnt snare samples).

Very subtle stereo effects for creating room sounds, mixing.

Allowing Pitch bend to effect a pad (off/on) so you can pitch bend a tom roll and not ruin your hi-hats/.BD

Sample offset. Assignable to midi CC and VST param.

Loop points. trigger or hold gate. layers. etc.

Ability to save samples directly to the plugin instance so that anyone who loads you song will have the samples loaded into the plug without any work. You never have to back up your samples either because they are saved with the song.

Allowing quick clear and easy set-up ;) always a must.

Should this be in the instruments forum?

Those are great features.. for a drummachine.

Ehem, so maybe I was being just a wee bit vague ;) - What I'm planning to make is an Audio to MIDI plugin. That is a plugin that analyzes an audio stream and converts it to MIDI notes.

EDIT: So no.. heh, it actually should be in the effects section :hihi:

EDIT2: I'll save those features for whenever I decide to start working on twitch again though :)

Cool. I hope someone looking to make the next greatest Drum machine (GURU creators perhaps) will read this.

Anyway sorry to hi-jack in that case.

Hi there,
you might want to have a look at some existing ones to get some inspiration:
- my own "KTDrumTrigger"
- "aptrigga" from Apulsoft
- "Drumagog" from Wavemachine Labs
- "PeakFreak" from TobyBear
and then there's also "jtrig" and some others I can't remember.
Good luck!

I would love it if it had some kind of very intelligent sound recogniser (like some phone services use for menues and directories). press learn snare, play the sound you want to use as a trigger and the select the pad. It would also be able to use variations of subsequent learnt input to alter the pad in a similar way to how th input is differnt from the original. FOr instance if I were feeding beatboxing in to trigger, I would learn it my snare sound. Then, if I made a shorter snare sound during triggering the application would make the samle playback shorter. The formant variations on the beatbox snare input would control the filer frequency of the sample pad. etc. It would be a combination of intelligent trigger and resynesis.

Most i mportant thing though is that it works all the time. aptrigga is the best one I've played with, but I'd love to see this get more flexible and more intelligent. MIDI out is nice too.

Sigh... It's something I've been wanting to make for a long time now, and I know I can do it.
See this thread here.
My problem is I can't do it at my daytime job, and I don't have enough free time to work on it at night. So frustrating... Maybe I should just quit my daytime job and take some risk here (unless some company is willing to support me)...

Take a long vacation/holiday. Then plug it for an agreed sum. I'd paypal for something like that.
