Hi
Academic discount goes for students and teachers, right?
I tried to find info on the Ableton site, but the form that's there is for students only. I don't know yet what the deal with Sonar is.
Questions: are EDU copies upgradeable?
Thanks
k

I have bought EDU software from Steinberg, URS, NI etc. and it is upgradable. I don't know about Live and Sonar, you should e-mail Ableton and Cakewalk.soulata wrote:Questions: are EDU copies upgradeable?

Some discounts are student only. Depends on the company. It also depends on the company whether therev are upgrades available. Adobe, for example, dont give you upgrades, because a new education version is cheaper than the upgrade price...

The price that www.academicsuperstore.com had for Live 4.0 was $249.95, Sonar4P $399.95 and Sonar4S $219.95. By comparison, Musicians Friend was $399, $599 and $299.soulata wrote:Hi

On their eligibility page they say that in general faculty and staff are included, but it may vary with some manufacturers. They give a contact address and number for specific inquiries.
I've worked for a state university for 21 years. Most EDU software I've gotten the last 10 years were full versions and upgradeable - ask the contact number. "Crippleware" student editions are less common than they were 15 years ago, but on the other hand you're no longer getting $30 versions of $300 programs in most cases, either - you'll pay closer to $129.

Why do these silly academic poeple get discounts, all they do is impose museum music on our sensibilities, what has that got to do with music developement and enjoyment, except their paypacket.

You reactionary orthographic fascist! Anyone who doesn't believe in the power of interpretive spelling to overthrow the status quo should be thrown into a pit of ravenous airedales and chinchillas. *nodnod*

I hope you don't mean it. Really.Rangtangtang wrote:Why do these silly academic poeple get discounts, all they do is impose museum music on our sensibilities, what has that got to do with music developement and enjoyment, except their paypacket.
because:
a) teachers have lousy salaries (at least here)
b) teachers should spread the knowledge of software... or something

Anyone who is basically out to "impose museum music on our sensibilities" is probably not going to be taking advantage of educational discounts on Ableton Live 4Rangtangtang wrote:Why do these silly academic poeple get discounts, all they do is impose museum music on our sensibilities, what has that got to do with music developement and enjoyment, except their paypacket.

You're right, Willabong. I can only assume everyone has a deep-seated desire to be devoured by ravenous chinchillas and airedales. No other explanation makes sense. :-}

a lot of companies do offer upgrades from edu versions; i'll be upgrading my reaktor4 to reaktor5 soon
some don't however. for example, with MATLAB, the edu version you buy is the only thing you get from them for that price; non transferable, non upgradeable. that's it. there again tho, that does cost $70, compared to to the full commercial price of something silly like $1600
