Hey all,

Can anyone give me some info or point me to links/tutorials on how to do sidechain compression in Cubase SX2? Is there a way to do it within cubase? or does it require a special VSTi?

I'm told its ideal to use when your bassline sits on the same note as your kick drum - so you can get the bassline to 'compress' triggered by the kick drum... does this sound right? (electronic music)

Thanks :)

You need a good side chain Compressor http://www.kvraudio.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=85956

Hi,

Yes, the technique you mention (ducking the bass) is one of many ways to use sidechain compression. You can do sidechaining in CubaseSX2, but you need to use a VST compressor that supports it.

otiumFX COMPADRE beatpuncher VST/PC has true stereo sidechaining capabilities.

You can find other sidechain supporting compressors from Kjaerhus Audio, Voxengo & Chunkware.

I have put together a video tutorial explaining how to hook up stereo sidechaining in CubaseSX using our otiumFX Compadre compressor. Download here: Sidechaining in CubaseSX using Compadre VST (6,87MB)

You should also try the slimslowslider sidech comp, it's not the best around, but at least it's free.

Nope, GUP-1 and GAC-1 are the only ones for now. And they come with both stereo and mono side chain :P

It all seems to work ok.. Can i just ask, is the quality of this compressor considered good? or is it garbage? :D

Also, the 'attack, hold and release' refers to the actual compression characteristics? Ie a low attack will cause the compressor to kick in fast, and a long release will cause the compressor to take longer to end etc?

Thanks guys!!
