What VST drumkit to choose

Hi,
I've been browsing the drumkits for a while now, and there are two drum kits that, from my point of view, are simply the best drumkits out there. Please don't shoot me, this is what I think I saw in the reviews.
I saw:
- Native Instruments Battery
- fxpansion BFD
Battery sounds like a terrific sampler and it seems that you can go anywhere you want with it, adding lots of samples, adding lots of expansions.
BFD seems to be the "real" thing. 11 microphones recorded each drum-instrument (different brands) in 46 different velocity states. Every microphone can be adjusted so you can change the sound in lots of ways.
Now here's my problem: I don't have samples, I don't take samples from music (because I really hate it), I just want a great drum kit with blues & jazz-drums, drum'n bass drums, maybe rock & pop, and if possible, even house & trance, to create my own music, not having to go and search everywhere in my music catalogs or ten different vst's before I find the right cymbal...
Which one of these should I choose? And why should I do that? Or should I change my view and even take another drumkit which will even more fullfil my needs?
Please help me decide!

Get DR008. It comes with a big sample collection, grouped into kits like you want.
It also offers synth drums. You don't wanna try 10 VSTs for that snare, you say: well, drum synths are easy to tweak!
You'll also get a upgrade path to Drum Nine.
You could also consider GURU, the free Drumatic (drum synth noly, no samples), µTonic,...
BFD is the ticket for realistic acoustic drums, there are some competing products too like DKFH and Imperial Drums.

Ok, I've looked at this DR008, but I can't find all the information I need on the website.
It has 15 unique drumkits, but, what drumkits are they?

Can't check now, but I remember a d'n'b and a afro_percussion kit.scippie wrote:It has 15 unique drumkits, but, what drumkits are they?
These kits are of course the sampled ones, you can create your own using the synth and sample modules.

well if you don't need to use your own samples BFD is the best there is.... you might wanna consider the XFL, too though....
and for your own samples I would wait for GURU if I were you... saw it at the Messe and it kicks some serious ass....
cheers,
mully

DR-008 has a LOT more than 15 kits these days (more like 300), covering every style you can think of and then some. BFD only comes with about 7, but the quality is incredible and you can mix and match kit pieces from those 7 (and a selection of extra snares & cymbals). Also, the mic blending, processing options and sheer detail in the BFD kits mean you can get as much sonic range out of 7 BFD kits as you can out of 70 DR-008 or Battery kits.Ok, I've looked at this DR008, but I can't find all the information I need on the website.

This account is dormant, I am no longer employed by FXpansion / ROLI.
Find me on LinkedIn or elsewhere if you need to get in touch.

Just FYI: I ordered BFD in the FXpansion shop Thursday May 5 and have just received my copy here in my Montreal office. It was sent in the mail! How great is that! That's service.
Thanks Angus and FXpansion!
Now I have to wait until about 9:30 PM to install.

You will freak over BFD. I waited for ever to get it, there are so many that seemed to have problems with it I couldn't justify the money.
But I couldn't stand it anymore......I had to get it. So far........it's the real deal. For brushes and so on though..........you'll need to cough up another 250 bones.
Battery 2 is not that good. It's not worth the 200 bucks unless you are a kick but drumprogrammer or use the samples with another engine. BFD has truely professional grooves and a very intuitive engine. Battery is just the sounds...........no engine.
Plus, I could never get that "ultra stereo" sound with battery to sit in the mix.......bfd is truely more professional.

I really Battery 2, but it's true that you have to be comfortable programming your own beats from scratch to get much out of it. The supplied kits are great, especially if you're into weird/electronic stuff. Stylus RMX is a lot easier to use, but doesn't give you as much control.eyeknow666 wrote:Battery 2 is not that good. BFD seems like the best option if you want realistic acoustic drums, especially if you're not into programming everything from scratch.

BFD stands for Beautiful Full Drums. Man this is a great product!
Installation was flawless and not a glitch in FLS5, Sonar or eXT. I did not have time to try Tracktion 2 or Live 4.
Cheers,
Godon
