i've been trying to come at this from the vst sampler-side of things but haven't had any luck -- so i'm wondering if any tracktioners have had any success bringing in apple garageband/jampack exs instruments in to tracktion.
i'm not terribly concerned about the 'channel presets' (as i think they're called in logic), where the track has the sampler + effects stored in a preset.
tracktion was the closest thing to garageband on the pc for me for a good year or more. since i got my hands on a semi-worthy mac i've been enjoying all of the great software instruments and effects that comes with garageband and the jam packs. now that tracktion2 is out i want to be able to use the instruments and haven't found a way to. i suppose i could find replacements for effects (especially in the boxed bundle) but am unsure if the qualities are as high as apple/emagic from the effects side (compressors, reverbs, amp simulators, etc etc etc)...
im aware of some of the 'sample players' out there (rgc, etc) and i know that t2 has a soundfont player and sampletank se, but none seem to support exs instruments.
are there any 'free' or 'cheap' ways to make use of (current version/garageband) exs instruments? mac? win? one? both?

Nope. For one thing GB/Logic use Audio Units, not VSTs. And the GB instruments aren't available in anything besides GB/Logic even if T supported them. I think you're out of luck.
I have Logic Express/GB but I find Tracktion to have some big advantages (my personal favorite is the ability to edit midi/audio in the timeline). Also GB hogs the processor big time. Then again, Logic/GB have some high quality instruments. Your only option would seem to be to record parts in GB to export to audio for use in Tracktion, which is a drag.
I know 10.4 has updates to the CoreAudio and you are supposedly able to send audio between applications similar to ReWire, but I haven't tried that yet, I'm waiting for the weekend to give that a go. I imagine you still couldn't sync the applications. I dunno. MidiPipe could do that possibly. That may be an option. It would seem a lot easier to me to go buy a VST or two that you like, and along with the bundled VSTs in T2 you should be set. One thing about the GB instruments is that though they sound fine, you are limited in the amount you can tweak them, and many sound very vanilla.

You could use Jack OSX. Set up a blank edit in T, put the Jack-insert VST as the only filter on the first track and hit record. Switch to Garageband/other audio source, and start the track you want to use. Jack will automatically route the incoming audio to the track that Jack-insert is on.
Coffee please, black, no sugar.
