Hey all,
I have Cubase SX 2 and am wondering whether it's worth the upgrade to SX 3. Can anyone tell me their experiences related to:
- Stability
- CPU efficiency
- Usefulness of new features
Also, does SX 3 do sidechaining?
Thanks,
Jer

Stability: rock solid (well almost). Much better than v2.JerGoertz wrote:Hey all,

CPU: more efficient than v2. (esp. with latest hotfix)
Usefulness: Lockable screensets, stationary plugin pop-up windows (finally), and track color coding are the biggies for me. Not to say the other new features are not useful or not used, but these two take SX3 much closer to Logic Audio PC in terms of usability.
IMHO it is a valuable upgrade from SX2.

Thanks for the info, meridian.
I remember reading something about "in-lane MIDI editing" or something to that regard, do you find that a big advantage?

Oh yeah forgot about that. It's useful at times but I could honestly live without it. The reason is that I usually work at a very wide zoom level and for the lane feature to be useful you have to zoom right in to do any serious editing. I find that this interrupts my (work)flow enough to be annoying.

if you work with audio, the audio-warp-feature was on the top ten feature list, too. and if you have outboard midi gear the device maps are nice, too. also the dblawflaw is gone now.
You're my son, dude!

The biggest improvements for me:
- Relative snap!
- Relative snap!
- Relative snap!
No, seriously, Steinberg has missed this for so long I was really getting pissed. Has been one of the key features for me to switch over to Logic back then.
Apart from that, SX 3 offers an option to get you straight to the audio channel setting of a VSTi track, which *could* be great if Steinberg didn't do it halfassed only again.
Of course, warp audio isn't all that bad, but personally I don't need it.
"Workspaces" are OK, but again, implementation is halfassed in case you deal with editors on them (and what else would you use them for?) as SX 3 often gets confused with automatic editor MIDI channel selections and what is selected in your arrange. The same goes for solo mode (but that has allways been maximum stupid, the programmers need a decent kick in their arse for that), SX is confusing the commands a lot and it tends to get worse with workspaces.
Freezing is indeed working rather well and stability is pretty good.

Stability is great for me as well. Deff. improvement from 2. Just don't put group tracks in folders
I think stability and performance are bigger selling points for me than the new features.
Biggest feature missing for me is the ability to move VSTs (you have eq. in slot one and comp. in slot two, carefully tweeked and know you want a delay in between - bad luck - no can do).

I've heard that SX3 sounds very very better than SX2... is real?![]()

no
is exactly the same
I believe every thread should devolve into character attacks and witch-burning. It really helps the discussion.

I have Neundo 3, but I can assume the same things are true for it as SX. I haven't had enough time to really sit with all the new features. I haven't quite grasped the whole new Window Layout-process, I completely forgot about the in-place MIDI editor...
and GOD! how could I forget the play order! You can instantly re-arrange your songs on the fly. Somehow, I don't think they put that in Nuendo...
I have used Audio Warp/Quantize, and it's just amazing. It's the new ACID (oh, also supports ACID loops now)! This update really feels like it'll take some time to learn its full potential, which alone could be worth the price. Hell, I'm still learning stuff about SX 2!
So I'd say 3 is not life or death, but it's a sexy beast!

Play Order track is indeed in Nuendo.bduffy wrote:and GOD! how could I forget the play order! You can instantly re-arrange your songs on the fly. Somehow, I don't think they put that in Nuendo...![]()
And it is a total genius concept. Does any other DAW have this? I could grow to depend on it.
