origami wrote:You're right, Kriminal, I always tend to count studio albums with original songs as pure albums. anyway, With Teeth is maybe NIN's worst album. Not many to choose from, but I like Pretty Hate Machine better because of its being more spontaneous and having a couple of great tracks; I like Broken better because it's rawer. I like Downward Spiral better because it's full of great songs, it's complex, dark, psychedelic. I like The Fragile better because it's more complete. With Teeth is just average for me.
Origami, just out of curiosity, about how many times have you listed to With Teeth so far?

We seem to agree on a lot of music... and if I would have read your post above a couple of weeks ago, I'd agree with everything you said 100%. When I first heard With Teeth a few weeks ago (I got it early), I was very disappointed. But after a couple of weeks of almost non-stop play in the car and occasionally at work, With Teeth is growing on me... A LOT! And this is after I've already given grief to my friends who liked it from the beginning. I really didn't think it was going to grow on me... but it did... and much more than I thought possible.

I'll jump into this one.. and I'll start off with saying that I've been a big nin fanboy sicne DS came out.

This album hasn't grown on me yet, though I think it will. My initial impressions though were that a few of the songs felt very familiar to songs from the Fragile.. even as specific as certain lines or just the way parts are sung. It was sort of a strange feeling.. also Trent doing the high singing in the first song made me chuckle.

All in all, I enjoy the album, and will probably enjoy it more in the weeks to come.

ARRGH! I hate websites with damn shockwave flash audio blaring out at me at full volume, with no warning!

Especially when it's heavily compressed, so as to be maximally loud and and attention getting!

Being suddenly assaulted with a couple hundred watts of compressed audio, is not my idea of a website making a good first impression.

Damn amateur website designers must assume everyone is listening over 3 watt soundblasters, with those cardboard "flatpanel" speakers!

:o :-o  :x :tantrum:

Thanks for not using caps lock.

If you drank enough rotten milk you would eventually come to love that as well.

The least someone could do, when posting a link like that, is to warn me about the impending attack of tinittus waiting for me on the other side of the mouse click. :o

At this point, I have to ask why you kept playing something practially non-stop, if it disappointed you? Do you have a bit of masochist in you? Are you researching new forms of non-lethal weapons? Were you doing a study for a university phsychology class, and all the lab rats were taken by the other students, so you conducted this brutal experiment on yourself instead? I just gotta know!

Not to people who have on headphones and were listening to music that wasn't all compressed to f**k, it doesn't...

It doesn't matter if you don't like it. There is no you, there is only Trent, or so I've been told.
Excuse all the blood.

A site which inflicts physical pain on its visitors within one second of merely loading the main page, does not qualify as a professional website -- unless your profession happens to be computer warfare.

I don't even remember what was on the home page. All I remember is cringing in pain, followed by a frantic rush to switch off my speakers. How on earth could this have been considered a sensible, professional web design decision? The answer is fairly simple. The people who considered this a good professional design were actually amateurs.

I know you didn't slam my ears on purpose, so I'm not upset with you, but that site is appalling. The volume should start off much softer, and either fade up slowly, or better still, have a volume control on the damn home page. Let the end user turn up the volume if they so desire.

take care,

I think it takes a lot of effort, deep thought, concentration and analysis to really understand what Reznor's music is all about. If that's not how you like to listen to music, that's okay, you might not like it too much then.
Oh come on. It's not Iannis Xenakis or Pierre Boulez for christ sake.

It is all "realative". Your suggestion is not a bad idea. When the website loads after the Enter Screen the music shuts off. I'm sure some people like it, it's a good track. I'd email the band, they might do something about it, why not?

hi MikeLeuz.
I've listened to it about 6 or 7 times in 2 days. I listened to it this very morning, and I must say the more I listen to it the more I like it. I still consider it less appealing than Downward Spiral and Fragile, but some of the songs are really growing on me. (Everyday is exactly the same, right where it belongs, only, sunspots, with teeth...even the single which i hated when i first heard it.

I must admit albums with lots of guitars grow on me rather slowly. I wanted it to be more electronic and so i was disappointed. Once passed that initial impression, I like it, yes, I like it.

mcLilith, I think it's logical. When you know an artist, when you like his work of art, you necessarily put some faith in his work. So when new work is available, even if your first impressions may be negative, he as an artist you admire deserves more attention, that's not masochism.

For example, i remember I hated Skinny Puppy's music first time I heard it. I bought ViVisectionVi, listened to it, said 'this is crap' and put it on the shelf not to play it again in months. Then one day I remembered that cd and played it again. A new world opened to me. Now they're among my favourite bands ever.
