Recording "what you hear" in cubase

I have a few plugins that produce great sounds when I tweak their parameters a bit (i.e. junglist and energy pro). After trying many times to record their automation in cubase sx2, I think I have to give up, because it doesn't seem to be possible to do it (even though I can automate them by drawing the automation with a pen, for some reason I won't manage to record it by enabling write mode and tweaking the knobs with my mouse). It might be that I'm missing something, but i really can't figure it out. Now my question is: Is it possible to simply just record everything that comes trough my speakers on a basic pc? I used to have a SB Audigy soundcard, which had the ability to record "what u hear" on the hard disk, but now I use external usb soundcard M-Audio Ozone, and I haven't found a tool for that in it. So maybe there is some other way to do it easily?

check out Tape-It .

Hmm I downloaded that program to record some audio, as I cant figure out how to record VST's in Cubase, but somehow it doesnt show up in my VST instruments box while so many other VST's do. I'm sure it is in the right directory! Can anyone help me?

That's cause you load it as an insert.

Alternatively... If you soundcard supports a "monitor input", like most m-audio cards do. You can create a new input in VST connections, with this monitor input, create an audio track and set the input as this newely created source. It will record straight in...

Thank you so much for your help guys! Ahja, could you please explain me a bit more how I know if I'm able to "monitor input" with my Ozone interface. I tried to find about it in the m-audio support page, but didn't see anything about that subject. What should I select when I create a new input in "VST connections"? I didn't see any "monitor input" option in the pop-up list. I would be forever grateful if you could be so kind and walk me trough this step-by-step!

hmm i can do it just by opening a wave editor (eg adobe audition, goldwave), pressing record on it, and then pressing play on Cubase!

have u tried that?

just download a trial version of goldwave or somethin
blasphemy is a victimless crime

Once you finished recording automation in Cubase you need to disable the recording (W) and make sure automation reading (R) is enabled on the relevant VST parameters for it to play back...

But yes, if there are unautomatable parameters (both via MIDI and via VST), you could use Tape It or Voxengo Recorder to capture the audio.

To record what you hear just open the plugs on the input channel instead of channel track .

That sounds attempting, but could you explain it a bit more? When I open the stereo input channel in cubase sx 2 I can only find VST effects, I can't load any VST instuments there can I? I know these are probably very stupid questions and I'm sorry, but i would be very glad if you could explain this to me!

Sure... The Ozone should support this. Do this...

1) Open Cubase
2) Navigate to Devices > VST Connections
3) select input tab (i'm using sx3, i think sx2 is slightly different)
4) Add a stereo "Bus", but right clicking.
5) Under "Device Port" tab, select 'Mixer In L/R'

If you don't see Mixer In L/R, you can go to your device settings and make sure they are visible, by going to VST Audio bay.

...Also it depends on how you set up your M-Audio Conrol Panel. Using under the 'patchbay / routing' tab, you want to select monitor mixer.

If you need additional help, just write me a PM. I'd be happy to help more.

Off to see autechre...! :D

There is a document (Routing discussion) free at http://66.46.134.58/basfiles/bas.htm which shows how to record real-time the audio prodcued by VSTi's . The Delta series cards were used as an example.
Also there is quite a bit of other stuff there, feel free to download it. (all PDF format, zipped)

That will only work if your soundcard's driver supports multiple outs one can assign to several apps.

I never tried, but when doing a realtime mixdown in Cubase (export audio that is), can't you tweak parameters while doing so?
There are 3 kinds of people:
Those who can do maths and those who can't.
