i have been tryin to wrap my head around gating...i think that i have it mixed up with a low/hi bandpass filter...ie i think that gating just puts master cutoffs onto a sound/synth...can someone please either explain or link me to an explanation of gating and what the difference between a gate and a "trance-gate" is?

A regular noise gate acts like somebody's pressing the "mute" button if the signal level is below a certain threshold.

Trance gates (brrrggghh!!) d-d-do st-st-stut-t-ttt-ter on the beat (each 16th or 32th note)

I believe that the Gate stems from the VCO(Voltage Controlled Oscillator) which is the foundation of Compressors and Limiters as well. Please someone correct me if i'm wrong.

Correction: its a VCA (Voltage Controlled Amplifier)

Oscillators make noise of themselves, Amps only change volume.

A trance gate is an effect that, for example, controls volume rhythmically. See CamelSpace. It usually can also control any other parameter -- Filter Cutoff, Rez, etc.

what are some programs that are specifically trance gates...
i have cubase sx3 and grm tools 1+2
and reaktor 4...
i guess i just want to HEAR the difference as well
to wrap my head around it

i'm thinking it might be the sound that i think is a filter sweep....but not sure now

Nope, a typical trance filter sweep makes it sound like you're under water first, and slowly let it emerge again.

The trance gate makes it sound like there is a faulty cable connection, or the DJ is lets the needle jump up & down.

Well, you've already had some pretty good replies, but here's my take. A normal gate just acts by cutting out sound if the volume falls below a certain threshold value. A trance gate allows you to specify which sections of a bar (or multiples of a bar) are silent, and which the sound gets let through on. This allows you to do the typical da-da-d-da-da gated trance effect and also allows you to do much more interesting things too.

Ah - a filter sweep is something different. Thats just the result of moving the filter cutoff value up gradually over the course of time. This is something you could achieve in anything with a resonant filter.

i did notice your product...but as i'm actually keen to get my hands on all 3 of ur products i'm kinda hoping for a group buy or just waiting on a package deal of some sort

The Trance Gate .ens is cool. Also check for an .ens called Kitten Gate.
