I just saw they are playing fri (to)night at the metro in chicago. it would be hard to set it up for me to go , but it might be possible... i've heard the name, not sure if it's that big of a deal, heard some stuff a while back... is this a "must see" or is it a "don't bother", any opinions?

Hi Ross,
A friend of mine saw them live a couple of weeks ago. He was completely blown away by their live performance. A very smooth live going from clean electronica to pure industrial madness, he told me... I think if you are in electronica you shouldn't miss it
But, try to listen to it before you go, anyway

I saw them 2 years ago in Berlin: very loud, rough and harsh show, though...
I miss the days they made music like in the 'Amber' album,
which I think was their most impressive and innovative.
And I guess also the most inspiring for other musicians in that genre.

I saw them live a few weeks ago, and i was so disappointed i started a thread about it here. IMO, they just lost their special touch- all i heard was breakbeats and, as mentioned, noise. And it's not that i can't stand noise, it's just that everybody there was like "waaw autechre noise, sounds great doesn't it?" just because it was them while i was really not impressed.
But they do have a style of their own, that's for sure.

If you like cold electronica, check it out. Their recent music is pretty cool and miles from the sappy easy-listening stuff they did in their early years.

i find with a lot of these producer/dj shows it's all about how busy they can make themselves look on stage which i find hilarious.
it's an art unto itself, and all the while amon tobin is sitting there smoking 12 cigarettes an hour and he plays it cool. he doesnt want to pretend like he's recreating his studio music he just mixes the tunes based on crowd atmosphere like a good dj should.
i really enjoyed seeing bonobo live of all the dj/producer shows ive been to.
i'm considering going to the autechre vancouver show which is coming up soon.

I went to one of the UK gigs, and it was awesome. The sound's a slightly stripped down but still incredibly detailed and mind expanding take on the style of the last couple of albums. It's probably not for people who're only interested in hearing a selection of the hits from Amber and Incunabula, though.

Ross G... Did you end up going? The show was really good, in my opinion. They played a lot of dance friendly stuff, so you could atleast find the beat, and move around a bit. Only problem is they didn't play long enough (1:30), it went by like 'that'. ...but then again I had a bit too much to drink. SND was nothing special, but rob hall played some decent electro kinda stuff between sets so it atleast non stop music. Autechre was just smoking one hitters all night up on a completely dark stage. Very humerous.
Was a good time, hope ya made it out!

hahahaaha! When we caught his Auckland show last year that's about what he did. He also had a sly little grin in his face the whole time. I think he enjoyed the show as much as the crowd. He sure blew everyone away with a pummeling of bass that's for sure.Mr. Tunes wrote:all the while amon tobin is sitting there smoking 12 cigarettes an hour and he plays it cool. he doesnt want to pretend like he's recreating his studio music he just mixes the tunes based on crowd atmosphere like a good dj should.
As for autechre... technically their stuff is pretty amazing (though I find it's rare that I'm in the mood to listen to a whole album). I'd consider going if they had dope visuals -- as mixing prerecorded material isn't that difficult really.
Most of the people I know in Auckland that listen to the harder, more industrial types of electronica tend to be addicted to ether and party pills - tis a shame really. hahaha!

ISTR that they do a bit more than that - more triggering, looping and reworking than just mixing.John-Paul wrote: As for autechre... technically their stuff is pretty amazing (though I find it's rare that I'm in the mood to listen to a whole album). As for visuals, I dunno - flashy graphics wouldn't have added much since the sounds are already enough to overload your senses pretty effectively, but some rave type lighting might have been nice given their more dance[1] oriented live show.
