Rather than hijack the "Best Commercially Mixed/Mastered CD?" thread, I thought I'd initiate another.
I'll open with the original releases of Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs, and maybe Let It Be. Superb albums except for the mastering and mixing -- although a lot of people don't mind. YMMV.
No fair refering to stone-age recordings! So don't bitch about, say, Robert Johnson.

Wait... loot _then_ burn? D'oh!

Elliott Smith - Roman Candle (1994.) It's an absolute gem lyrically and musically, but i'm not the biggest fan of the "production" if there was any at all

The most recent Mars Volta album really suffers from the 'squash it flat and turn it up' mastering mentality.
Good music though.

Husker Du 'Zen Arcade'
all part of the DIY ambience, but that's some hard to listen to production imo

Kyuss - Blues for a red sun
Damn, I love this album but it sounds like f**king shite to me..the bottom end is just this huge bloated smear like a giant bloodclot from a chick's period ..

Hmm, my vote is Tool - Opiate . Damn what a hard-rocking album with a crushing rhythm section, but it sounds shit! One song has a telephone ringing in the background even.
Also, Chris Poland (Ex-Megadeth guitarist) - Return to Metalopolis. One of my favorite instrumental albums ever, but terrible recording quality with no low-end to speak of.

Though undeniably seminal music, the very early "The Kids Are Alright"-era Who recordings an amazingly bad....

All the old Ramleh, Consumer Electronics, Sutcliffe Jugend and related stuff - sound quality is shit but that just adds to the atmosphere.

The original CD master of Bitches Brew is pretty infamous. Thankfully it only took them 10 years to put out a proper one.
The second (I think) printing of Spiritualized's Lazer Guided Melodies has a *skip* on one track. I don't know if they ever fixed that; they might still be printing them that way.
I guess I don't love to much music that's really terribly mixed/mastered. Or maybe I don't hate many mixes of music I love. Or something.
