Highdropod - "Sub Species"
Interesting point about Kyuss. I think it's the sound that they were trying to going for tho. I'm sure the mushrooms and desert combo contributed to the overall sound of that one.

The highest form of knowledge is empathy, for it requires us to suspend our egos and live in another's world. It requires profound, purpose‐larger‐than‐the‐self kind of understanding.

ok it's not a great album, but could be passable if it hadn't been completed compressed and distorted to FM radio mush by the mastering engineer - "Birds of Pray" by Live

Yes, although there must have been problems during recording as even the HDCD remaster fails overcome many of the issues.emdot_ambient wrote:You guys will probably kill me but I think the worst mastered great album was . . .
Mike Oldfield's original Tubular Bells.
I used to think it was amazing, and most of the music still is . . . but the recording is utter crap!

I have heard that the original tape Oldfield used was overdubbed so much that the oxide started to flake off and he had to start over again . . . but it's still pretty aweful by most standards.dhanjit wrote:Yes, although there must have been problems during recording as even the HDCD remaster fails overcome many of the issues.emdot_ambient wrote:You guys will probably kill me but I think the worst mastered great album was . . .

"The Whole of the Moon", a collection of the best of Mike Scott and the Waterboys, really showcases 80's harsh, digital-sounding production at its worst... Great songs, but in retrospect, shame about the sound!

Evis Costello - My Aim Is True (the recent Rhino release w/ bonus disc). Why, you say, as it's more clear than the previous CD release? Well, the audible digital distortion heard on several tracks. WTF! How did Rhino reissue that great album and let it go to press like that.
After that, I'd say REM's entire IRS catalog could use a good remaster, then the US version of the Buzzcock's Singles Going Steady (sounds like crap, but apparently it's already been remastered in the UK).

I'm sorry this post wasn't about techno.

Not a single great album on that list.Peel wrote: I often find those "best-produced" albums a little grating. (example from the other thread: http://www.johnvestman.com/commercial_cds.htm.)
Hell, I had trouble finding one that was even remotely worth listening to.
Well put.Peel wrote: ......Sort of the thing Martha Stewart would be doing if she were a mastering engineer. If these albums were girls, they'd be wearing tiaras.

Oh, and the Beatles! All the UK releases. Please f**king remaster these already!!! While people may bitch about the new Capitol box set, and how the label butchered most of the mixes, you can not argue that it sounds great compared to the UK versions we've been hearing on CD since 1987. If you don't believe me listen to I'll Follow The Sun on both releases, the Capitol release makes you understand why Neumann mics are so revered as the acoustic guitar sounds great, that same acoustic guitar sounds like crap by comparison on the original CD issues.
I'm sorry this post wasn't about techno.

yeah but the remix ruled
the aphex twins ambient works volume one was recorded on a home tape recorder
and it's awash with cloudy hiss that just totally fits the music - actually since he's started going pro he sounds worse

I believe every thread should devolve into character attacks and witch-burning. It really helps the discussion.

Hmm... I see what you mean. It is REALLY lofi though. Glad to hear someone even knows anything about that album. Maybe it's all the echoplex that makes it sound so muddy. Whaddya think thehumanPlugir?

Okay how about these... Any MC5 album, any Blue Cheer album. They were simply too loud and distorted. Perhaps engineers/techs, etc. just didn't know how to record them back then. Anyway... Kick Out the Jams!

What an album! I have in only on vinyl (and it sounds like I shouldn't bother with the CD). I loved that album when it came out - especially the title track. Funnily enough, ten years later I married someone called Alison (everybody say "aah")Funkybot wrote:Evis Costello - My Aim Is True (the recent Rhino release w/ bonus disc).
Mind you, I loved "Echo Beach" but finding someone called Martha was taking far too long

Derek.
