I haven't tried the pocket limiter yet, and I will do! I give big ups to TbT plug-ins.

I guess the most obvious difference between limiters is the knee they implement - if they have a softer knee, then they'll generally tend to distort less. Which is why Daniel's Pocket Limiter is so good IMO - you can set it from completely soft to completly hard.
I'm sure there are other differences, but that is the main audible one. Not sure, but I always assumed the old Waves L1 was 100% hard knee...which is why it distorted so easily. You can check out what different knees do to sound by looking into something like Cyanide distortion - there's a preset in there called hard clip (or similar)...it basically shapes the incoming audio into a complete flat top. Tweak the shape so that the edges become more rounded, and you hear the distortion becoming softer...same principle in limiting.
