EDIT: I meant to say VELOCITY, not volume.

Is there a way to automatically randomize the VELOCITY of a midi pattern, so that every time it is placed, the VELOCITY changes slightly?

Let's say I have a pattern with 4 notes, of varying VELOCITIES:

4.0 4.0 6.0 8.0

I want the VELOCITY to randomly vary by 0-.4 every time the pattern is played (and I don't want to make 50 copies of the pattern).

If I the pattern was looped 3 times, the result might be:

3.8 4.4 5.7 8.2

4.0 4.1 6.3 7.9

4.3 3.9 6.1 8.4

Is there any easy way to do this? I'm guessing there certainly is!

most hosts allow automation of volume ...
among other controls ...

what host are you using ?...

could i do it in fruity loops?

also, i want it to automatically work on its own. i don't want to have to use a controller of any kind to randomize this.

it's possible in FLS ...
easy way not entirely random , per se ...
you can hand draw a control line for volume ...
close your eyes when you draw it ...

hard way ...
assign a random lfo to control volume ...

If I use a random LFO to control volume, can I use this to control the volume of the MIDI note?

For instance, if I'm using a sampler for drums, I may want the snare sample to actually randomly be a harder sounding snare.

So the output isn't the whole issue.

How would do I do this?

I don't want to draw the volume. I want it to be random so that if I play the same pattern 32 times, it always sounds different.
I already know that I suck.

that would seem to be more of a velocity issue , assuming you have multi-samples , triggered by velocity ...

look at the controls associated with the piano roll , lower window ...

you might also want to investigate the use of a modular environment , such as xT , used as a channel insert , in FLS ...

I suppose I actually should have said VELOCITY. I'm really stupid. I want to control MIDI Velocity this way. What type of chanel insert could modulate the midi velocity based on a pre-defined pattern?
I already know that I suck.

there are any number of midiFX type plugs that could be assigned to velocity ...

midi routing in FLS is a tad clunky , but can be done ...
it's easier to do in xT , which can be used as a channel insert in FLS ...

this is fairly sophisticated , and not something i can get into tonight , as it's late here ...

you can use the search function here , and do a bit of background reading ...
others may check into this thread , as well ...

i'll be back tomorrow ...

if you haven't done this before , expect a bit of a learning curve ...

EDIT: so i have ideas now for trying to figure this out. thank you for your help normal. much appreciated.

i know how to setup a midiout, set the port, and then rout that port to a sampler.

i know how to link the midiout knobs to a randomizing controller.

but when i link it to velocity, it doesn't modulate it.
I already know that I suck.

ah , then ...
you're well on your way ...

if you haven't seen this , you'll find enough here to keep you busy , for awhile ...

I'm still really confused.

I want to actually modulate the velocity by a certain percentage, and I don't know if this is possible.

It seems like I could control the actual velocity using modulation, but I don't want to ignore the velocity already in there.

I want to alter the velocity by a certain precentage each time, i.e. 10%.

I'm still so confused, and I tried to figure things out and just wasn't able to understand.

SOMEONE PLEASE HELP!

let's start with some more information ...
what sampler are you using ?...

Your problem is that velocity isn't a controller per se- it's part of the note on/note off message.

A MIDI note on or note off message is ewo part- the first is the MIDI note number (0-127) followed by the velocity (also 0-127). Note that a note off's velocity is 0 unless your keyboard is capable of transmitting release velocity.

glad you figured it out. i was about to say link the volume of the sample to the fruity formula controller and use/write a formula. :)
