Ouch. Distortion.

Hydratone is awesome but I don't think of it as a mastering device sice the tubey effect is so forward. But if that's the sound you always want, it will quickly give up the goods.

I think it makes everything sound like the mid '60's. 8)

All the elemental audio plug-ins (except Finis), Vintage Warmer, Soniformer and Elephant depending on what I need.

Post

EQ: HarmoniEQ (surprisingly useful)or Cubase Native
Compressor: Vintage Warmer or Flatblaster (both great)
Limiter: Elephant (unbeatable)

sometimes SpaceMaster or Pristine Space
sometimes Voxengo Stereo Touch
sometimes BBE Sonic Maximizer (as exciter)

Chain works quite well for the sound I desire, especially if the mix is good.

Planning to acquire Voxengo CurveEQ and Soniformer

(thinking about Oxford Inflator or something like it, but I'm on a limited budget)

I work almost exclusively with VST instruments, so some of the issues revolving around "live" recording don't concern me even though I realize they are mostly track, not mastering issues.

Post

My chain usually consist of compressor->eq->limiter. The plugins I use for those jobs are:

- Voxengo Crunchessor, CurveEQ, Elephant.
- db-audioware db-L and db-M.
- PSP VintageWarmer.

Sometimes I add some reverb to the mix for which I use any of: Kjaerhus Classic Reverb, DSP-FX Reverb, and now Voxengo Pristine Space Light.

Sometimes I want to dirty up the whole mix, for which I use any of: PSP Nitro, e-phonic LoFi, iZotope Vinyl, Kjaerhus Classic Filter.

I used to put a stereo fx on the master, but I was told by wise KVR ppl I'd get better results by working the stereo on each track.

Now I just use Tracktion's Final Mix.

I only use sparse reverb on snare and guitar. Maybe I'm wrong there too, but I like it.

Post

Currently it's Lampthruster - GPP (or Classic Limiter). But it could very well become Final Mix...

EQ (if necessary), panning/stereo and compression per channel.

Post

Most of the time just Classic EQ and TLs Maximizer or BuzMaxi3 (and now Pocketlimiter).

The mix is MUCH more important than the mastering-process IMHO.

Firium/Hydratone > Soniformer2 > Elephant/Vintage Warmer > Finis

Depends on the material though

I ocassionally use PSP Mix Pack, (Saturator, Compressor)

Often Use Logic's Compressor

Always use Tritone HydraTone EQ, I rarely use another EQ now, sometimes PSP MasterQ. And am eagerly awaiting Tritone AngelTone

Ozone's Limiter (Although to be honest, I would like a top Dog limiter) At high settings it sounds too distorted but maybe a lot of limiters are like that, I haven't tried a really excellent limiter.
Any Suggestions for a Mac AU Limiter?

I'm waiting for Tritone's SqueezeTone compressor to come out, which is why I'm holding off running group buys for any other plugins, as I still feel there is a space for Top Dog Compressor in my virtual rack that is yet to be filled.

I dont really do mastering to be honest. I prefer to sort out problems in the mix! And the things I would want to achieve through mastering, I dont think can be done in digital (yeh, yeh :hihi: ).

The fact is that many of the post production tasks could be easily sorted out WITHOUT all the mastering gear had the engineer got access to the multitrack. I mean, this whole craze with multiband comps - pretty futile when you have the mix infront of you! So my advice is to learn your mixing before you attempt to do anything to stereo mixdown. You're just going to make you're life hard that way.

BUT, there are things that mastering engineers do that cant really be done in the mix (well, a digital mix at least). For example, running the mix through vintage preamps to generate warm saturation. Processing with hi end outboard EQ's to tweak the hi end and get that wonderful glassy sound. So, if I were going to attempt home mastering, Id want something that did (or emulated well) these pieces of equipment. Neve pres, SSL buss comp, GML parametric EQ's etc.

Wow, arent i just a ray of positive sunshine today! Ok, these are my software choices:

Equim / Firium - very transparent, able to notch out extremely tight bands. Might be useful for correcting mix problems.

Vintage Warmer - use for compression, and saturation.

L2 - for those pesky peaks

MjMultiband Compressor (with quite an amount of "stereo separation" and "master drive") -> Spectralive -> TLs Maximizer.

(not too happy with this though and looking to get a more "open", professional mix. So every day I test something new, currently checking out Soniformer and Hydratone.. I wish it was easier, or just -1- plugin that analyzes the material and does everything necessary.)

Waves Mulit-band Limiter followed by the Waves L2 on the two-mix buss...
