Is there a useful General Midi library out there?

It would be great to have quality samples in GM patchs as my hardware could more easily control the soft sampler.

If money is not a problem: Colossus

On a smaller budget: Ravity

Love that graphic! "COLOSSUS SMASH!!!"

OmniSoundz.

I got OmniSynth (the SampleTank-only version of this) as part of a GB and it's pretty good. OmniSoundz is on sale at a hefty discount, and the Refill version for Reason's NN-XT sample player is even cheaper (though not as much off the price).

Heh. I used to use Fluid, but I'm feeling much better now!

Although there are a few truly excellent free samples (the Splendid and Helgesson pianos, Learjeff's Rhodes, the G-Town and Ott-Orgel pipe organs, etc.) buying commercial really seems to be the way to go. It takes a hell of a lot of work to sample something even decently, and few people have the time or resources to spare to do it without reward. *small sigh*
Wait... loot _then_ burn? D'oh!

One question is whether you really need the spcific GM soundset. Are you playing back GM midi files? If not, why not something like Sonic Synth 2, ManyStation, or Sampletank 2.

OmniSynth is really OK, good sounds.

Sonic Implants has a knack for putting together small soundfonts that pack a lot of punch: Their 24M GM Wavetable is a very complete and still viable option. However, I feel that since the days of limited PC memory are all but over, they could have reduced the price a notch or two by now:

Me? No, or very rarely and involuntarily, such as when some inconsiderate dickhead embeds a midi file into a web page. The author of the thread (Tacitus -- seemingly well after all these centuries)? Perhaps.

Sorry; I couldn't pass up the opportunity to make three (perhaps more) snarky comments in one paragraph!

Btw, you have good taste in sample libraries; each of the ones you mentioned occupy a sweet spot in the quality:price plots.

Thanks, by the way, that eSoundz group buy on Sampletank 2 L/Sonic Synth 2/Amplitube/Bonus Library is pretty attractive.

The PlugSound Global Collection looks like a nice GM soundset:

Thanks, PlugSound Global is of good quality but I don't think you can change the programs with midi. I use a hardware controller with a display (in general midi so I want the banks in the computer to match that in the hardware controller) so I don't what to have to use a mouse for no good reason .
