just to let you know - since tobias' site isn't up and some others than me have probably been searching for the set too. an arrangement with tobias and the wonderful people at legaltorrents.com (thanks simon!) was done to distribute the g-town set as a .torrent in its entirety.
for those who don't know g-town, it's a high quality multisampled set of percussion and other miscellaneous instruments recorded at the grebbestad church in sweden. be warned though, the samples include lots of natural church reverb so if you want completely dry samples, this might not be for you.
anyway. you can find the .torrent files at http://www.legaltorrents.com/index.htm. there are two versions available:
1) one with all the original content: all the patches in gigasampler format
2) one with almost all the content as .wav and rudimentary exs24 patches: about the only thing missing is the bongo extras.
you should probably get the gigasampler format package if you have a sampler that imports gig - the exs24 versions on the second set are just the results of exs24's automatic gs conversion and aren't perfect. the .gig set is also a smaller download due to more compression. the .wav package is mostly for people who don't have a modern soft sampler and want to use the separate .wavs. or people who have exs24 and don't want to hassle with the conversion themselves.
if you don't know what bittorrent is, then http://www.bittorrent.com/ is a good place to start and get a basic client for yourself. it's basically a peer-to-peer software for "sharing the load": you can continue to distribute the set you've downloaded to other people for as long as you want to - so they're downloading some parts from you, some parts from the original seeder and some parts from other people.
and for those who think bittorrent is evil and only meant for sharing illegal copies of software, movies and music - think again. legaltorrents has plenty of other killer content available for 100% legally and free... and lots of linux distributions are distributed via bittorrent for example. it's a good tech, we just need to find good uses for it.

Anyone else get these yet? I ran it overnight and have both versions now. Looks like a good solution for people offering large free downloads with bandwidth problems.

I already had the old versions and they're great. Good effort; the Titanic soundfont could benefit from this kind of distribution as well.maximilians1 wrote:Anyone else get these yet? EDIT I've sent him an email about this b.t.w.

FWIW simon of legaltorrents fame is a really cool guy - he also runs an awesome netlabel called monotonik and has done lots of other cool things. i wouldn't be surprised at all if he liked the idea of distributing some other free big sample sets at legaltorrents too in case the library creator (or someone with creator's permission) is willing to ask about it and upload the files to him.
never stop loving music.

Yes, torrents are the way to go these days. There are many good clients available, many better than the actual BitTorrent client. One is Azureus, but it's Java based, and hogs your CPU. I use BitComet, which is at bitcomet.com, and it gives me the fastest, most consistent speeds of all the clients I've tried.
There are many more, so look around. I think all companies with free downloads should at least consider this, unless they want to track who has it.

Good to see p2p being used in such a positive way! This technology really is great, but with all the illegal shite it has become some what of a dirty word.
I have never used Bit Torrent, but I'll be sure to try this out. Free, quality, LEGAL soundware... thats the kind of math me likes to do!

Grr... lousy 30 kB/sec... need more seeds! Or more high-speed prevalence...If memory serves me, I wrote:this will be hella faster!
