Normally?

Stuff like Stevie wonder etc

minor pentatonic = instant funk
Not bad meaning bad but bad meaning good

Major, minor, Dorian, Mixolydian, Pentotonic blues...

But quite often this stuff doesnt work in a particular key at all. Alot of the time its just min7 chords moved around with melodies being based on the arpeggio's of said chords. Jamiroquai for example do the old Maj7 / min7 descending chromatic thing. This is nice actually, very distinctive sound.

My advice is to just set up a funky beat, jam a pentotonic blues bassline over it, then drop in some Maj / min 7 , 9 , 11 type chords. If you can make them move into each other in convincing progressions then you're onto a winner. Remember that this music is based in Jazz, so conforming to strict rules is not the order of the day. Making it sound cool most definately is!

any scales that work with the chord notes :D

stevie wonder has wicked harmonies. i say just learn to play his songs youll learn a ton from there

To me, it's all in the rhythm. You could easily do a funk/soul song in nothing but diminished chords and scales. If it ain't got the funky rhythm, it aint funk!

A lot of stuff is in Eb, because it is easy to read and write charts when the whole scale fits on the staff.

Or because the trumpets are B-flat based? E-flat is rather awkward for (bass)guitar actually, unless you tune the strings one half down.

I'm a bit confused by that - It would be a problem on a 5 or 6 string bass at all.
Somewhat awkward on standard Pbass for example though :hihi: .

5- and 6- string basses are a recent development IIRC from the late eighties or so. At least that's when they became widely available. (I'm sure Les Paul has a couple 6-string prototype basses from 1941 in his basement.)

Actually George Harrison had a 6 string fender bass that he would play if Paul were playing piano, so they date back at least to the early 60s...

Just play the black notes.

That's funk.
