Last week I joined the new SoundsOnline forum: http://www.soundsonline-forums.com/index.php (http://www.soundsonline-forums.com/index.php)?

as I often used to visit the EW forums at Northern Sound Source.

My username was Brahms & Liszt (English Cockney rhyming slang for someone who's had a few drinks :D ). I made several helpful and constructive posts and began to enjoy the new forum (although I was less than happy about several false and unfair posts criticizing the Northern Sound Source forums for heavy-handed moderation - a great irony, as I now know).

In the course of a thread discussing the respective merits of EWQL Silver and GPO, I happened to mention that although I preferred Silver, GPO outsold it significantly. I happen to know this because I have friends in the music retail business, but I supposed it was common knowledge anyway.

Imagine my surprise when Doug Rogers immediately posted in the thread demanding to know how I had come by this information! I replied that I had a few friends in the industry and supposed that would be the end of it.

But no. Nick Phoenix also posted in the thread frothing and raving because I'd dared disclose such "sensitive" information, and the next time I logged into SouldsOnline, there was a charming little private message waiting from Doug:

"With reference to the GPO vs Silver sales comment you posted on our forum I need to know your real name, your real email address and who you work for.

"Please respond as soon as you get this".

Those who find this as incredible as I did may view the original message here in IE's .mht format:

http://rapidshare.de/files/1813879/PM.zip.html (http://rapidshare.de/files/1813879/PM.zip.html)

I replied that I'm a self-employed English writer with friends in the retail music business and that was as much as he needed to know.

When I logged into the SoundsOnline forum today my account and all my posts had been deleted.

This is incredibly ironic, as Nick and Doug have made several self-congratulatory posts about the wonderful "Freedom Of Speech" on the new SoundsOnline forum and how this differs from Northern Sound Source.

How strange, then, that in all my years of posting at Northern Sound Source, I've never had a single problem, while SoundsOnline's paranoid, fascist behaviour has led to my being banned in the first week.

I would advise anyone who reads SoundsOnline's many threads slandering other boards to ask themselves just what it is that they're all so afraid of.

Only a handful of people have been attracted to SoundsOnline's new forum - all the posts are from the same half-dozen regulars bickering amongst themselves.

What a contrast to the thriving forum EW enjoyed when they were part of a popular respected board like Northern Sound Source!

No doubt they're now regretting their foolhardiness in severing such an invaluable connection.

Whatever, I shan't be going back there - not even to laugh at their blatant puffs and self-promotion.

My advice is to give these paranoid control-freaks a wide berth.

I find it interesting that this has come less than a week after someone well-known here posted some regarding their experience of the old Northern Sounds forum, and their preference for the new SO forum.

As a result, I find it odd that the link to the 'original messages' you are talking about does not work.

Select free at "Select your download:" then select the file from the bottom of the page.

And I also thought about this. Great that we still have KVR left as an uncorrupted forum.

Works for me - ya just gotta ignore all the puffery and visual noise and click on "free" to get to a page where you confirm the download.

That having been said, all that seems to be in the document is Doug Rogers demanding:

"With reference to the GPO vs Silver sales comment you posted on our forum I need to know your real name, your real email address and who you work for.

"Please respond as soon as you get this.

"Thanks,

"- Doug"

Yep...

Are the emancipative days of the internet almost over then?

My apologies. Bloody hell how convoluted can you make summat?

Although to be honest, it doesnt mean that much context-free.

Don't be too quick on that - nothing is immune to change, and in fact there's a very high chance everything on the internet will become more like that. More sites will pop up to fight that, the older ones will decrepify and rot and die out and then the cycle will continue.

This is how I view it, anyhow.

CHECKLIST TIME!

okay, so now i've heard shit spoken about AT LEAST:
* papa, the moderator and owner of northern sounds
* francis, the bela d media owner
* nick & doug, the ewql dynamic duo
* gary garritan, the gpo & gos guy
* donnie christian, the guy behind dc orchestral libraries
and also witnessed either highly non-professional or plain evil posting action from SOME of the aforementioned.

i'm beginning to think that some sick bastard either really wants a total full-on war between all the forums, users and developers (or just wants to throw dirt to some of his competitors, who knows) and goes on posting blatant lies about people under fake ids... or, to straightly quote Lex from VI Control, "I'm begining to belive that sample developing is a popular form of therapy for menatly disturbed in the US..."

peace out, hope kvr doesn't get dragged into the huge mess this seems to be.
never stop loving music.

Who knew that sample library creation was such a cut-throat business, eh?

At any rate, it's hard to keep up with the facts since they're now spread over umpteen forums, but I tend to judge on who's *speaking* the shit, not on who's having shit spoken *about* them. Everyone may be a target, but there are some who just refuse to stop shooting...
