POLL Who Would Be Interested In

I voted "other" -- I think pay per download + MP3 teasers + a couple freebies here & there would be more effective. I don't think I would subscribe to a $50/year "soundfont of the week" service, but I would pay say $5 or so for a small soundfont that was useful to me.
Just my 2 cents, good luck with the site!

A site I like for the way it's made is the RedReactor website, you could make something similar to preview the samples before downloading:
http://www.redreactor.com/html/samples.php?folder=63

Thank you HansM for your vote and feedbackM'Snah........(aka HansM) wrote:I voted no, maybe should have voted 'other'.
A valid and real point, I would not want to send out emails to remind the subscriber of checking the website - though I would probably use my sig at my site and maybe K-v-R to wirte the instrument that is current.M'Snah........(aka HansM) wrote: I've subscribed to a couple of sample / loop providers the last few years, and to be honest: The first weekend I download everything that seems interesting on the site, and after that I just forget about the site, until I get a reminder to renew.
Thank you HansMM'Snah........(aka HansM) wrote: I might subscribe, but that's just because I tend to buy almost everything, especially from people who have a positive (to me) image here at kvr, the price is decent and it's not totally unusable to me... (e.g. I'm not at all interested in vintage synth or drum loops).
I been thinking about this as an alternative option, to stick with creating sample libraries that can span various sample players – this though a much larger project and more time involved, therefore whatever I end up doing – it will be one or the other, but not both as it would not be workable in the allotted timeframe.M'Snah........(aka HansM) wrote: On the other hand, I don't mind paying for good usable samples, e.g. the Wusik/Manystation/Zvon sets or like the online sounds at esoundz. But I always prefer downloads, paying for something that I cannot use immediately is a dissatisfier...
For sure though it would be a download solution – subscription overcomes the waiting aspect – it would be just the initial set-up time for the log in to be sent, from there on in any new content would be available to the subscriber straight away for download.
Best regards,
Peter

Hi Lorenzo333, thank you for your input.Lorenzo333 wrote:I voted "other" -- I think pay per download + MP3 teasers + a couple freebies here & there would be more effective. The $ 50 dollars is the initial starting annual fee, so any early subscribers get on board at that price as they would supporting the very first stages of the project, as time goes on and the content grows, the quality will increase too. Of course the $50 per year will increase for new members as the library grows – and the benefit is the renewal fee will be at whatever your initial joining fee was – so if in a years time the subscription is $150 per year for example, but you joined initially at $50 you could re-new at $50 – this is a kind of reward to the early subscribers.
If broken down your just a soundfont of the week is 52 weeks in the year + 12 larger projects – so that’s 64 sound fonts in one subscription – but also each font is backed up by 24 BIT 44.1 One Shot samples – also 16 BIT 44.1 looped (sustain) samples
So that’s 64 sound fonts, 64 24 Bit One Shot sample sets and 64 16 Bit looped sample sets in one subscription – which is quite a lot of work and a very large commitment bearing in mind it comes with a money back guarantee for the life of your subscription.
But this thread is about the idea of it becoming a possibility – lots to think about and it may well not become a reality and in fact I may take on board one of the other ideas.
Lots to think about and I still need to focus on the pros and cons of each idea before implementing any of them.
Best regards,
Peter

Thank you SampleScience, that’s quite a lot of work to maintain a site like that, I would rather spend the time on sample creation.SampleScience wrote:A site I like for the way it's made is the RedReactor website, you could make something similar to preview the samples before downloading:

It would need a simpler solution for presenting the samples, still a good link to check out how they solved the problem.

I have given myself a headache trying to figure out what would be the best option
I think looking at the poll and reading the feedback something like a donation, and for the really big files a buy access to the file, which is a way of saying purchase the file imo.
The subscription idea would be a big commitment – plus exclude a number of genuine people from access – but at the same time eradicate mass downloading and provide a revenue stream to better the equipment and host the files etc.
The donation idea allows access to the files to everyone – but almost certainly cost more to host and may not allow further extensions to equipment or instrument hire etc. But it has no real commitment issues, and allows a free reign to content – and keeps the doors open to other ideas – in other words its worth a go and if it does not work out then I could always pull the files and place them into log in type access. It also allows the possibility of having the real big files behind a pay for the access type idea depending how things go. It may allow or encourage others to participate and have their own pages with donate buttons on, and they could give a 20% of any money they get back to AudioShots to cover the hosting.
So atm Donation seems the stronger option – and I will scrap the plans for the subscription service – too risky to take on based on the poll.
Thanks all for your input, its been enlightening.
Best regards,
Peter

Speed,
Best of luck with your site.
BTW, I looked at the Red Reactor site, and a stripped-down version without the bells and whistles doesn't seem too difficult to create/maintain by hand. (Once you have the "pay for 1 soundfont" part in place, that is.)
For the really big downloads, maybe share-it.com would be useful?
Best,
L

I'd favour the donation-way. But I have been told that was a stupid idea from people who rely on donations. I am on a budget and donate pretty much even though, but a 1000 downloads and some 5 donations if ever seems to be a "common thing" more or less. So I understand you're searching for other ways.
I'd like the idea to SHARE sounds. (as I told ya on a mail I got some 25 CDs full of audio-monkey-files with minidiskrecordings, but due to my extreeemely bad mic most of it is crap for sure
)). If it's only about making music and going beyond the limitations we all have by trying new sounds (sometimes it might even be useful to take some strange samples recorded somewhere which aren't pro-quality) a nice idea would be that many users like rsmus7 or me and 100 more share sounds, and the person who hosts them has to be paid for hosting for sure. As an addition, if there would be a user-base of some of us at KVR, people like you with your extremely good-handmade
samples and soundfonts should then receive donations. People who couldn't afford 50$ or who would like to donate to those wonderful smartelectronix-people too could be in the boat too, that way.
But sure, that's maybe too much dreamin'. So just a suggestion. I think many people go out and record something?

Given up with this idea as I don’t know the best way to actually get anything back on it.
Might post the odd wave, if I feel like it again.

Dont lose heart now Peter... just when you have me interested!!!
As mentioned in another thread Im starting to record weird and wonderful sounds due to your inspiration
I'd be more than happy to let you add them to your library of sounds if thats something that would interest you???
I also had another idea while sitting in my yard... lets get 30second samples of the background blur of where everyone lives... interesting sounds from the country and city no doubt!!! Of course the guys next door to me are knocking the house at the moment so my enviornmental sounds would be nasty!!!
Dont give up!
Dave
