Deleting MS Outlook Express

Try typing "services.msc" (no quotes) in the RUN box. This brings up all kinds of stuff you can turn off and might be the way I turned off Outlook, can't remember at this point. But you can do it, there's tons of info out there if you search on it. Look for Black Viper's site, he's got tons of info on streamlining XP.

Seconded. Blackvipers site was great - unfortunately it seems to be down at the moment! Shame as it pretty much the best resource on installing and modifying Windows installations. If you're not connecting to the net with your music PC you only actually require, IIRC, a grand total of 6 services

I don't even understand what that does. I fear it would make more of a mess of things, but what do I know!

At this point, I'm considering wiping the HD and re-installing XP.

System Restore is XP's way of never having to say, 'Oooops, some system files have disappeared'. Or as XP says: "System Restore can track and reverse harmful changes to your computer". Like, deleting Outlook. That would be terrible!
It is on by default. Check Control Panel => System, click the System Restore tab. If you are going to rip out vital parts of XP, like email, you need to stop System Restore. However, if you install a flakey driver, System Restore can be your friend.

But since you seem to be claiming ignorance, why not try the XPlite demo edition. It turns System Restore off and on for you while you go about your nefarious work.

so my question is- do you need the 2-3 mb of space that is required by OE? you could just ignore the app, its not hurting anyone and there are much better ways to improve performance...

As long as it's not hurting anyone, I'm cool with it.

I'm pretty sure I turned off system restore long ago (ala Vipers suggestions).
