BBE is really useful, and it does add some high end, but it is also a phase correction processor for dynamic speakers (i.e. anything other than electrostatic speakers).
You can get a technical description elsewhere, but it causes the low and high end to come out at the same time rather than there being a lag which dynamic speakers cause. I find this increases presence and makes the midrange recede, so I always boost the mids when I use BBE.
It does fill the role of an exciter in a way, but doesn't really sound the same as exciters, which generate a kind of artificial high frequency content by adding distortion.
