Is there a gap at the end of the exported section, which Tractkion is not rendering? Or is there a bit missing?

Check your sample rates. If the project sample rate in Cubase is different from the wav sample rate you get that problem.

Good point. Tracktion will convert the sample rate behind the scenes if its different to the current project rate. Cubase doesn't.. audio at the wrong rate will play at the wrong speed.

cool thanks. that must be it

To be fair it depends on the import options. By default SX asks if you wish to copy the file to the working directory, and resample it to fit the current project sample rate. The preferences allow for you to not get the dialog, and to set which are your preferred methods for import.

Fair enough. My working knowledge of Cubase stops at v.5 ;) I still prefer Tracktion's approach though: I mean, who the hell deliberately re-pitches their audio by recording at the wrong sample-rate for their project?
