Can SX do this?

I have Alesis ADAT and I use it only for AD conversion. But in the past I used to record a lot with it. I was wondering if Cubase SX can be configured so it will record the same way as my old ADAT. Let me explain:
With adat you set four locators start, punch-in, punch-out and end. So when you start the playback at firs locator (you hear the track) when you reach the punch-in the playback stops and recording starts (you hear the playing), when you reach the punch-out recoding stops and playback starts again.
This is a nice feature it enables you to replace a bad note in the solo for example. Currently I'm copying the track, cuting thr original track ...bla,bla,bla... It's wery time consuming process.
Anybody?

There are buttons in the transport bar for that.

OK, I know that cubase have punch-in button. My question is can I automaticaly enable "monitor button".
What I want is to hear the track before punch-in, than hit the monitor button and listen to the live recording and disengage the monitor button again after punch-out.

Well I'm doing that like you said "by hand", but why do we have those punch-in/out buttons anyway....Jonny X wrote:Yeah, I understood that much. Maybe this would require a bit of programming of sorts. It would probably be easier to do it by hand though.
Basically you want to do punch in recording though - and I think you just use the punch in /out buttons for that, along with pressing play at the desired part of the track.
Easiest way to do it would be to record a new take around the part you want, and cut it up in cubase.

Monitor button automation does't work. I already tried that one.Jonny X wrote:Oh, and what about using the 'monitor' to feed some phones, while the normal output feeds speakers - then just where the phones when nessercary - I havent seen a 'monoitor' automation but there may well be one below volume etc for the track automation.
Don't you think that this feature should be someting simple. This is a simple thing which everybody needs every day or am I the only one.....

OK I'm embarrassed now 'cause I have just figured out how it's done.
1. You set left and right locator.
2. set the pre-roll and post-roll
3.Under preference-VST "Auto monitoring" set this to "While record Running"
The only thing I still have to figure is how to use pre/post-roll in cycle mode.
I guess I should read my manual more carefuly next time. I'm so lazy about this things.

You beat me to it....pre and post roll can be set to quite long lengths so it's all do-able in Cubase.
I can't be 100% sure, but I think in cycle mode the pre/post rolls don't work - i.e they only play in and out on the first cycle...but I could be wrong as usual
Another way to do it would be to control your punch in and out with a foot pedal, and set the loop locators longer than the bits you want to record. So you can still have a few bars at the start and end, but just tap your pedal to punch in.
If you're recording from a keyboard, I'd also have a look at the section on remote control - it's ages since I used it on the old VST5.1, but I would have thought you can still assign keys to record functions - used to be the default was the top octave, where each key controlled start/stop/punch in/out/ etc.

In SX, the cycle markers (the locators) are also the punch in markers, so having a cycle that punches in and out autmatically is not as straighforward as it could be.
If you want preroll for the first lap, that is fine, set it and press record. After that the end of the cycle will be the the start of the next, so any audio recording will capture lead in notes at the end of each lap.
With prerecord enabled in the preferences, you can capture the audio beofre it actually starts redcording (in SX3) so the lead in notes can be safely captured on the preroll section.
To make editing less cumbersome, it can be useful to simply create a cycle area that encompasses the section you require, inclcuding lead in notes and tails, and record it in cycle mode.
Once finished, all the lanes are filled with different takes of the same section, ready for comping.
HTH,
Bas.

I had a thought (well it happens once in a while
) can you set SX to slave to the adat's cycle mode, and set the locators as punch points in SX.
Because of a move of studio gear, I cannot test this (sorry) but it might be worth a try.
