One of these days I'll be in for a decent Eq....don't use Eq much apart from some cutting here and there, but that's mainly because I don't like s/w Eqs that much so far. (Might get the Kjaerhus one, and Eqium is nice in the highs/high mids but not good enough all-round). I used to use it when I had h/w desks and access to some nice old analogue Eqs, but s/w so far leaves me cold.

But that URS thing looks tempting, though I see you need an iLok to demo it. So what's with the new PACE systems - I wouldn't go near anything with PACE previously, but a decent Eq might make me. If s/w uses iLok as protection - does it still install all of that nasty stuff on your PC? Does it still stop you mid-session for codes and that kind of nonsense, or is all the protection actually on the iLok and not your PC - is it like a dongle or summat...dongles I can handle? Not really sure what it's all about :?

If it's anything like what I know of PACE, then maybe I'll just forget it, and wait until I can get a UAD (which probably has the edge for me anyway, because of all the nice dynamics plugins available). But I don't really need more comps or limiters. I don't really need a good Eq that much, but it'd be useful if I can buy one without some horrific anti-piracy protection scheme. I miss characterful Eq that I can actually boost with (and I haven't heard a single Eq in native form yet that I'd be happy to use as a special FX.) But Fulltec might be it, if it's safe to use.

Someone enlighten me please.

The license is on the iLok, you just have to install its drivers, download the license, install the plugs and there you go.

You can boost a lot with the Fulltec, it's really nice.

PS: Getting a UAD-1 as well would be an excellent idea... ;)

Thanks...so it's set up pretty much like the Steinberg dongle then? Well, that puts it into the useable category then. I can take the iLok out and plug it into another PC and get up and running straight away, as long as the drivers are loaded into that 2nd PC? It's portable in the same way as a dongle?

I think that's right, but I haven't actually tried it. I will report no problems with the ilok on system. I now kind of wish all my software worked off the ilok; would make re-installs a lot quicker.
Grist for the glamour mill.

Kritikon, yes, that's how it works. Actually, like Bobby, I'd love all my plugs authorizations to be on iLok. OK, maybe apart from the DSP ones...

yeah that's the way it works... iLok runs mighty fine on my machine.... and I kinda like it....

it's better than challenge response in a way....

and have you guys seen the iLok videos over at digidesign.com that the BombFactory guys made???

;)

ANY company who uses Pace knowing how people feel about it is...questionable.

Since getting my 2 UAD cards, I have no desire to use any native EQ's or compressors at all. Well...except for Hydratone. 8)

UAD plugs are the Bee's Balls. Their Pultec emulation is fantastic.

There's a thread floating about where somebody explained that the school where he works had one ilok key stolen, and they had to buy thousands of dollars worth of licenses anew.

To me, it's like losing you ID card for the local gym and they make you pay your 5 years membership fee again just to get a new ID card.

It's also like paying a fine for being honest.

Link?

I just bought mpowered protools which uses the ilock. I swore I'd never buy ANYTHING with a dongle, but protools was the next step. It works fine so far. If it works for me, it'll work for most people.............

OK...I'm a little happier about the whole thing. I've used a dongle with Cubase for years and it's never bothered me.

Hmmmmm...that worries me. It's certainly something I'd have to check out properly before buying anything that needs an iLok. I would have thought you'd be able to buy another iLok if you have proof you've bought the 1st one, and simply transfer licenses etc to the new one - proof of ownership of the s/w license is easy enough for any company to check. Steinberg have a pathway for buying a new dongle if your old one is broken - although I'm not 100% sure they'll let you if it was stolen. If you've got to buy everything completely from scratch, then that would be a big no-no.

A UAD is sounding more like the viable alternative. What's the news on the new PCI format? I heard it was going to be updated, as there was some worry about new PCs losing PCI slots. That could be a disaster if you're a UAD owner.

They make exciting videos about authorization?

iLok - you really need it maaaan! It makes those plugins sound soooo much sweeter. :hihi:

Trouble is what if someone pours liquid nitrogen down your usb port, cracks the iLok and steals your PC? :( Never leave it chained up outside.

OMG! Have the nerds descended to the level of fetishising about copy protection. They'll be collecting serial numbers next. :nutter:

Feed it a BLT.

I like the idea of liquid nitrogen - I can see the steam making a good effect on those changing lights on the front (I know, it's sad, I have a PC with swirly lights on the front :? - it makes it go faster you know....)
