FWIW, I've got no clue about mods and modtrackers and whatever, but XM files can be played back by WinAmp fine.

Lawnmower Of The Damned wrote:Well the really great thing about mods was that you could usually hear everyone's tracks in editable form. If you heard something really cool in a song and you wanted to know how it was done, you just scrolled to that part a looked at it. If there was an instrument you really liked you just saved a copy of it.

Now most people on KVR keep their tracks to themselves, and you can't see how something was done in the songs. Don't get me wrong, I don't think it would even be possible to go back to mods, but I do feel that a certain element is missing from VST culture.
Wasn't it that Peter Gabriel once told on his website he wanted to do music with people interested in his style? We should have (had) the ability to play with different instruments of some songs of him and come up with sth new. Now that could be the revival of Mods etc.? Never heard of it, so a nice thread here.

Ok - as said, I don't know anything about mods.

winamp can play mods 'kind of' i would say.. you can hear generally the style and melody and stuff, but every aspect seems to be at least a little flawed..
many times i have wished they would just include a well known proper engine.. i'll bet they're using a tiny wee decoder to save on their installer size..

I'm always going about mods and the old amiga demo scene (with dewey eyes) to friends. It's probably pretty annoying.
Saw Ceephax Acid Crew on saturday (just a local night) and noticed that there was what looked like a tracker on a TV onstage. Pointed it out to a friend and we both walked through the dancing crowd so we could get a good look. Started going 'ah yes, thats an amiga... ah yes, Med I believe'... and then suddenly realised that while everyone around us was just enjoying the music, we were geeking out and being incredibly sad

:hihi:
We can conclude that the DCT of a pizza doesn’t resemble anything edible.

The main thing I've noticed with Winamp is that it totally f**ks up pitch bend/portamento etc information. I might post some old tracker cronmusic in a bit, actually. Let the world hear the bollocks I did as a 12-16 year old.

I may well try to pick trackers up again. I could fly around the FT2 interface faster than I could write music, but haven't had much luck getting to grips with Renoise and the like. Maybe it's just because it's been so long.

Since nobody has mentioned it yet another good modplayer is Deliplayer; plays a lot of other formats as well.

mods got me into making music! back on my old amiga 500 (later 2000 with 8MB of ram! and ONE HUNDRED MB scsi HD!) with protracker! i needed like 6 months to figure out how to program a normal 4/4 style beat pattern :) when i switched to pc i instantly grabbed fasttracker and went on. never made this "special" mod/chip/xm sound though. :)
