I've heard of FX plug-ins you can control with a MIDI surface controller, like the Tascam US-428. Is this a real thing, or did I just make it up during an hour-long commute to work one morning?

I'm shopping several inexpensive programs for a host (n-Track, Cubase SE and Cakewalk Home Studio), and would like to be able to use the -428 rather than the mouse for mixing. But hey, one must do what one must do, right. Just interested, thanks for your insight!

Well, most fx plugins, even freebies, support automation through its vst wrapper. And better yet, most have a "learn" feature where all you do is select "learn" and then tweak a knob on your tascam and BINGO, that knob is assigned to that parameter. Works for most vst synths, samplers, etc....anything that uses a vst wrapper.

By the way, if you want an inexpensive host, try EnergyXT. For only $50, you have the most modular piece of software ever conceived (besides $1000 Logic...). It supports midi learn through its vst wrapper...awesome midi environment!

Hope this answers your question :)

I'll check that out- thanks!

Say, mg..., do you have a screenshot of that EnergyXT, or do you know how I can find one (don't see it on the web page)? Also, is it on a par with n-Track, or maybe even the Steinberg or Cakewalk budget offerings?
I'm only doing audio, and on a relatively limited scope, so I don't need lots of "bells and dongles"! That's why the 'budget' thing (I know the "b-word" can be annoying to some, who are to be considered 'higher ups' in the endeavor... but I am a lowly bass player, only seeking a pretty basic signal flow).

Thanks!

Hi Sloom. I have cubase SE and been using it for over a year and its perfect for what i need( I didn't want to pay for all shit that comes with bigger pacages too) . But I am having trouble trying to get midi to effects(dont think its possible). So if you want to control effects from your tascam Se probably isn't for you.

Allright, thanks for the heads-up, jack! I'm not doing MIDI, though- pretty lo-key, analogue-modeled situation I'm into. I mostly want a mixer I can control with the -428, and if FX automation can be done for audio that'd be great- but not everything.

I just posted about EnergyXT, asking how it does with controllers like mine. I'm getting down to n-Track, EnergyXT, or SE.

Thanks for the reply!

P.S. I'm letting remain the whole post, 'cause I always think that it's interesting to see the flow of thought on paper, as it were- but I just realized you were talking about FX automation when you reference "getting MIDI to effects". I am severely challenged with this business of relating to MIDI! Sorry! Heh. Pretty dumb... Anyway, I get your response. Thanks again!
