Programming Synths? Try Synth 1, Triangle II.
Host? Try HomeStudio or FL as mentioned above.

Good ones mentioned here. Look at the corner right above from here, where you can find descriptions of a hosts b instruments c effects. (hidden, just go over it right above with the mouse).
Easy programs to start with are
- n-track (www.fasoft.com) for Audio, very easy, not too good for Midi though
- as already mentiones fl studio, or Orion (demo at www.synapse-audio.com)
- Tracktion (demo at, err www.mackie.com - very intuitive, read the helpfile - I read that from Tracktion 1, now T2 may have one too
- and the fine thing is, anything you search is on ONE page...
With lots and lots of free effects and synths if you are on Window try all the synth-edit-instruments and effects. This alone will take some months
. And nearly all of them are free...
google for example for
-Odo (!!)
-Krakli webster
- Istvan Kaldor (maestro, sympho, light bag2, many more)
or simply go to the synth-edit-"corner" here at "NEWS". Tons of stuff!
As already mentioned at rgcaudio.com look at sfz (freeware-soundfontplayer, great)
Triangle2
Linplug has the free alpha...
So many more good freebies or fine and not too expensive stuff which you can demo and look at yourself...
I'd suggest you buy some "Computermusic" magazine. It comes with a DVD and contains a) a freeware-host named Computermuzys - not as intuitive as Tracktion or FL or Orion or others though - some fine instruments for drums (CM505 for synthetic, 202 for err samples; some CM303 for a little bass and an own sampler DS404), plus fine plugins like OHMYGOD! from Ohmforce.
Aaaah, www.ohmforce.com has the free FrohmageVST ....
Audio-editors:
free is audacity (for windows)
Cheap and good is Acoustica3.2...
Well, tons of stuff.
But don't forget to make music, I made the mistake and tested all of that and after a while was puzzled. So you might simply turn back to the good advice people here before me
gave you
If you got questions, you can ask many people here.
A good, VERY good thing, but a bit complicated for beginners is ENERGYXT. It is a host, can be used in other hosts as an instrument or as an effect. For example you can take your guitar, connect it with your PC/laptop, fire EnergyXT up and connect in Energy XT many effects together. Then play on...That's a very nice thing and only the pretty easy thing to do with EnergyXT. --> www.xt-hq.com or look here at the forums, there is an EnergyXt-forum with help and a beginner's guide!
Cheers...I have to stop here:-)
